better choice for text box
-
We’re hoping to create a static welcome presence on top of the sidebar of this blog — http:cnyspeaks.com — but are frustrated with the font size and other limitations of the text box. Is there a way around those limitations or a better option?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In text widgets, you can use HTML commands to increase font size, change color, change font family, etc.
This support document explains how: http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/ .
Also see the two following blog posts by Panos which give more information and examples.

Unfortunately, the text widget is stripping out all HTML when I hit save. Anyway around that?
-
Typically if it is stripping things out then it is code that is not allowed such as javascript or flash, forms or iframes: http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/ .
I have had a few instances where knowing the code was right, it was still stripped out for some odd reason. I just kept putting it back in until it finally took.
Can you paste the code here in the forums between backticks (the key to the left of the #1 key on the top row)? We can then take a look at it.

Sorry it took me awhile to get to you sacredpath. I’ve had a little break through — I am getting the HTML to work in the body of the text widget, although the title bar is still giving me the same problem.
In the body, this is working:
<span style=”font-size:125%;”>CNYSpeaks is a non-partisan, non-profit effort that seeks to spark constructive conversations with Central New Yorkers about critical issues in the region. Using facilitated live forums, online social networking tools, surveys and journalistic articles, we work to get beyond platitudes and move toward consensus. CNYSpeaks then distills those conversations into Citizen Agendas that help guide policy makers, business leaders and others that shape the world around us.</span>In the header, even the simplest HTML disappears. For instance just trying to bold the title Welcome to CNYSpeaks! doesn’t work — it also strips away when I hit save. If I can bold that and punch up the size just a little, I think I’ll be all set. I also don’t really like the alignment of the title, but I don’t think I’ll worry about that.
The header, I am guessing, is off-limits to html, or is there a work around?

You might wanna try this: Just create an image with your text message (image editing program’ll work) and size it accordingly to your sidebar, then just put it in a text widget.
I’m using vigilance theme too:
