Big spaces between lines when using Header 1

When I use Header 1 to make the font bigger in my headlines, the spaces between lines are tripled. Is it supposed to be that way? If not, how do I correct it?

Header tags are not meant to be used to change the size of your text in posts. They have specific meanings for search engines relating to how your blog or site is organized. They should not be used to make text larger.

Search engines use your headings to index the structure and content of your web pages.
Also note that the CSS of your theme determines line spaces above/below h tags.
If you want to change the size of text inside of posts, then you need some basic html coding to set font sizes. Here is a good article about how to do so:

I see on a second look that you are customizing “The Columnist” theme. Please link to some examples of where this is happening and how you are using these tags.
