Bilingual website: how to add categoties to custom menu?
-
I’m trying to create bilingual – English and Latvian – website.
1.I’ve chosen to do it via custom menu. I think I’ve done the most of the job, but now at the very end, at the custom menu widget, where I should choose the categories (= languages to appear), the scroll-down menu has no categories, it displays “All category pages”.
What’s the trick?2. if I would have chosen to do different, linkd websites, what’s the benefit? Does it means that I also have to buy another website.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What’s the trick? It looks like you’ve created two different menus as shown here:
However, you haven’t activated either one under Locations here:
https://amrserviss.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php?action=locations
I think your best bet here would be to merge your menus into one larger menu rather than having them broken up by language. So, I would just create a new menu or edit an existing one you have created and put both languages on one page. Then, you can enable the menu on your site by adding it as the primary menu here:
Does that make sense?
if I would have chosen to do different, linkd websites, what’s the benefit? Does it means that I also have to buy another website.
If you setup another site, you would have to manage your content in two different places. So, for example, you could create another blog amrservissenglish.wordpress.com. On that site, you could use the subdomain en.amrserviss.eu, which would stand for the English version of your site. Then, you could set it up exactly like your current site, but have it in English instead of Latvian.
However, in this case, whenever you updated the content on amrserviss.eu, you would also need to update it on en.amrserviss.eu. Does that make sense? It just requires a bit of extra work. However, if you want to set it up, I’m happy to provide further instructions!

Hi,
Thanks for your response.
Yes, i’ve created to different menus. My attempt is to make appear either one or the other language through “if” and categories.
If Latvian = only pages with category “Latvian” appear; If = English, only pages with English appear. But when I want to do it – trough ‘Visibility’ button of Custom menu at widgets, it doesn’t allow me to do it.
But I’m not at all sure that I’ve got it right, nor that it’s the best solution. If I active Primary and Secondary menu, it’s clearly not what I want.
I don’t mind having two different website either. How do I create the subdomain en.amrserviss.eu? Do I have to register it as a separate website?
Also, what about plugins? Is it true that they can’t be used on wordpress.com?
In nutshell, what’s the easiest way to have both langugages on the website that would look nice and be easy? Is there a step by step (not just bits) tutorial that you could guide me to? I’m definately not the first person in this need.
Many thanks,

Hi Maija,
My attempt is to make appear either one or the other language through “if” and categories.
If Latvian = only pages with category “Latvian” appear; If = English, only pages with English appear. But when I want to do it – trough ‘Visibility’ button of Custom menu at widgets, it doesn’t allow me to do it.
But I’m not at all sure that I’ve got it right, nor that it’s the best solution.Ah – this actually could be an option. However, since you can’t tag pages or separate them into categories, it would be cumbersome to put this into action. You would need to enable the Custom Menu widget on your sidebar and specify unique pages under the Visibility options. So, you would effectively need to set a Custom Menu up for every page on your side.
I don’t mind having two different website either. How do I create the subdomain en.amrserviss.eu? Do I have to register it as a separate website?
In my opinion, this is the best way to go. Detailed instructions on how to setup a subdomain can be found here:
Also, what about plugins? Is it true that they can’t be used on wordpress.com?
Yes, that is true. You can read more about that here:
In nutshell, what’s the easiest way to have both langugages on the website that would look nice and be easy?
In my opinion, the easiest way to do this would be to create a separate subdomain for whatever language is less popular for the visitors of your site. So, if the majority of your visitors prefer Latvian, you could setup a separate subdomain for English and include a link that says “For English, click here”. That would lead to the all-English page. Does that make sense?
If you want to go that route, please follow the instructions above to setup your subdomain. Once you have that setup, let me know, and I’ll be happy to provide further instruction.
