im okay with the real basics of wordpress ie i have posts on it, a theme i like and it works. That does for me so im pretty clueless about the more technical aspects on the site. What i need help with is..can i promote my a website on my blog? My partner has just started a business writing services website and id like to help him promote it to get some traffic to it. I dont want to do it as a blog as it will get swallowed up by other pages and i dont want to static page it as its not really MY thing. Can i add a widget or something that will link to his site and if so can someone advise me as to how. thanks a million everyone :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes you can link to any external site. However, you have to create an actual blog. You cannot use it merely to drive traffic to any third party site in post after post. If you do that the blog will be suspended.

In a nutshell free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM cannot be used to drive traffic to third-party sites via advertising and/or affiliate programs. E-commerce cannot be conducted on wordpress.COM blogs. No retailing or reselling the work created by anyone other than you is allowed. See types of blogs section I linked to above.

Please see this link to learn about the differences between free hosted WordPress.com blogs and WordPress.org software installs for self hosting. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you require advertising, you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org

You could write an Article / Post (Posts search better than pages) about why you are excited about the new adventure and why they are highly qualified (insert comedy part about them being editor of their 6th grade news paper and wanting to get back into writing ever since etc.) –

Put qualifications etc in the Post then a link at the end to their site. Use a Custom Menu to put the Post link by your About or put a link in the Sidebar using a Text or Links Widget so the Post will not get lost.

Actually, that sounds a LOT like an ad, and you could run into trouble. I would not put anything in my sidebar like that. A page or a post could work.
