Biz Blogging Confusion
-
Is biz blogging allowed or not? If not, please explain this site: http://www.ducttapemarketing.com/blog/ I’m just trying to get a definite answer to what is ok content in an educational biz blog. The TOS seem to outlaw the ducttape site.

That site is powered by wordpress.org software and not hosted here at wordpress.com. The TOS is for blogs hosted here at wordpress.com and anyone that hires a different host, downloads the software from wordpress.org will only have to follow the TOS of their host and the laws applicable to their area. That blog would be TOS’ed if it was hosted here I would bet.

In the absence of a clearer directive from staff, all we can do is point you to the slim official resources and what we’ve stumbled across. From what I’ve seen (and I’m not staff) you can blog about your business, but you cannot make offers. You can include one text link to a site of yours that does do direct business such as CafePress or Amazon or whathaveyou, but if you sign all your posts with that link your blog will be deleted. You can have a blog something like a Guy Kawasaki blog, ie a blog designed to share your wisdom about your area of expertise (“a client of mine had a problem with his supply chain, and here is the solution we worked out” etc), but you cannot have one that offers services or products, so no “and contact me to arrange a booking” stuff.
The best way to get the definitive answer is to put what you’re planning in bullet points and send it in to staff asking “Is this okay? If not, which parts have to go”.

The safest option, of course, since this is such a grey area and policy changes frequently, is not to do any business blogging here at all. Or, if you have no other hosting options, take frequent backups.
-
Once you get your content OK’ed by staff though, they are aware of your blog and as long as you stay within those pre-determined rules (& guidelines), your blog should be safe as they shouldn’t (says crossing fingers) delete your blog that they previously approved without warning you. That of course is said with no disclaimer.
