Bizarre error message

I am trying to follow comments on a blog that I do not own. I have done this many times in the past by entering a comment and clicking the link ‘Notify me of follow-up comments by email.’ This generates an email message to me asking me to confirm that I want to follow the comments. When I click the ‘Confirm Follow’ link in that email message, I’m sent to a page that lists all the pages on that blog whose comments I’m following. It’s cumbersome, but it works. Now, however, when I click ‘Confirm Follow,’ I am sent to a WordPress page that includes the message ‘Your subscription could not be activated, it may have expired.’
How can an unactivated subscription be expired? I have confirmed that I am signed into WordPress with my active account. Thanks for your help.
