Blank emails
-
Over the last couple of days I’ve been receiving emails via my Contact Form, but with no content. All I have is the email address. Some have come from the same email 2 or 3 times in quick succession. I’d guess they are spam, although the addresses don’t all have that obvious ‘spam’ look about them. They are also from different email providers (msn, gmail, sbcglobal net, hotmail, att.net), so I’m struggling to work out what’s going on. I rarely get any contact via my contact form, my site only has a small following. WordPress has shown me how to report them as spam, don’t know if I could or should do anything else or what their purpose would be. Just wondered if anyone else is experiencing something similar.

Hi there!
I see the blank messages in your Spam folder in the Feedback section. They do look quite spammy. I also noticed that you’ve been testing your contact form and it looks like those messages arrived correctly.
I wouldn’t really worry about the empty ones, however, if this keeps repeating, reach out again via https://wordpress.com/help/contact so we can have a closer look.

Hi. Thanks. I’ll just keep reporting them as spam. The first test I did myself didn’t work, it said ‘link had expired’. But second and third attempts went through. I’ve never had blank emails before, only spammy sellers. The spate of spam comments many of us experienced a while back were clearly from spam addresses, these looked a little different. Thankyou for your reassurance :).

Just following up on the above; the empty emails are still arriving, some are being picked up as spam though not all. It’s not unmanageable, just a nuisance. I’m more curious though as to the game-plan. What would be the purpose? Any suggestions?

I’ve had another look at your site, together with my teammates, and we noticed that your contact form does not have any required fields. That means that you can submit any message without actually populating any of the fields.
Try setting the message field as required and you should stop seeing empty email :)
Here’s more information about customizing the Form Block:
I hope that helps :)
