I’m trying to change my home page to show Portfolios I’ve created – have tried everything I can think of in the customise section – but to no avail ….. HELP ?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @gardnermuirhead, did you figure this out already? I can see your portfolios on the front page.

Hi thanks !! Just in the last hour ….. after a few YouTube videos !! But now I can’t seem to put info on my ‘about’ page !!!!

  • @gardnermuirhead glad you’ve got it!

Head to wordpress.com/pages — looks like you’ve got a few about pages there already, so maybe focus on editing the oldest one, and delete the others.

    Then:

    – Head to Customize > Menus > Menu Locations
    – Click Edit under your current menu
    – Add and remove links as needed; making sure you’ve got one for About

Let me know if that helps! This may also help, once you’ve created the about page:

    Hey another few questions !!

Is my site discoverable on a google search ? if not then how can I do this ? Also , can people share my page on FB ?

And is it possible to add a blog menu …
And why is my contact page so busy ??

    Thanks !

  • Hi there,

Is my site discoverable on a google search ?

Your site is currently set as hidden from search engines. You’ll need to set it to public if you want Google to index it. You can do that at My Site ->Settings ->Privacy. Once you set the site to public search engines will start indexing it, but it will still be around 6 to 8 weeks before it will start showing up in search results.

Also , can people share my page on FB ?

Anyone can share your site on Facebook by copying the link and pasting it in a Facebook status update.

You can also add Facebook sharing buttons to the bottom of your posts and pages. You can find that option under My Site ->Sharing ->Buttons

    Sharing

And is it possible to add a blog menu …

Your site has a menu. On your theme it appears in the sidebar. It’s the bit that says Home, About, Contact. To add new pages to your menu, first publish the page. Then go to the Customizer:

    1) Click on My Sites, then click the Customize button next to Themes.

    2) Click Menus ->Primary. That will show your existing menu.

    3) Click Add Menu Item to add another item to the menu.

why is my contact page so busy ??

I see only one submission to your contact page:

    https://gardnermuirhead.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=feedback

Can you provide some more information on why you say it’s busy?

I do notice that you’ve added your own username, email and website address where the labels for the contact form boxes should be. I recommend you edit your contact form and set those labels back to the default labels, as you’re effectively now telling everyone who views your site what your username and email address is. That’s an invitation to spammers and hackers to abuse your information.

Thanks I’ll go and have a look at this …

Every time I edit the contact page – it keeps telling me that the fields have to be filled in and it won’t let me reset . When I publish – the page just returns to the same situation with my name and details in the boxes …..

One more thing – when I make a blog button on my menu and create a blog in there – is it possible to add tags to that particular post ?

  • Every time I edit the contact page – it keeps telling me that the fields have to be filled in and it won’t let me reset

In that case, edit that page and delete the contact form entirely. Then create a new contact form using the + button in the toolbar.

I’m not sure what you mean here. To create a new blog post/entry on your site, you go to My Site ->Blog Posts ->Add. That opens the editor where you can add content, as well as tags and categories to your posts.

You can see here for a bit more detail:

Ok ! I appreciate I’m a bit slow with this … I think its the whole thing about creating pages then adding them elsewhere .. My main problem seem be creating and tagging blog posts and keeping them all in the same place .. for instance if I create a new portfolio and call it ‘ Blog’ – I can only create one set of tags within that portfolio … rather than continually add new posts inside there and add different tags to each post topic .. I’m sure there is probably a very simple solution but doing it online is making it more difficult for me ..maybe I need to speak to someone in person !!

  • Right. Portfolios are not the best choice if you want to regularly post new updates. People can’t follow portfolio projects to receive notifications of new ones. Portfolio projects are more intended to showcase examples of your work for prospective clients, a digital art gallery of sorts.

If you want to do regular updates to which people can subscribe, you need to publish blog posts instead. Blog posts you can tag and categorise, and you can even add links for different categories to your menu that will only show posts in a particular category when clicked. The tutorial I linked to above explains this in a bit more detail.

You can have both, of course. Your theme is built around the portfolio content type, so that’s what it shows on the front page you set up. But you can also create a blog page that will show your posts. To do that, follow these steps.

    1) Create a new Page, title it Blog or Updates or News – whatever you want.

    2) Publish the page without anything on it besides the title.

    3) Click on My Sites, then click the Customize button next to Themes. Click on Static Front Page.

    4) Next to the Posts Page option, select this new page you published.

    5) Save.

Now any blog posts you publish will appear on that page, while you can use the portfolio projects showing on the front page to showcase more permanent examples of your work, i.e. use the projects for the best works that you want everyone to see first.

Sorry again – I did all the stuff you described – and called the page ‘blog post test thing’ but it doesn’t show anywhere on the home screen menus when I when I save / publish it . The ‘BLOG’ menu button I created on the home screen under ‘ ABOUT ‘seems pretty redundant because it only contains one editable post . I would like this button / or a similar new button to be where I can add all my tagable blog posts … I’m not usually so flustered over this stuff – but I’m finding it very difficult to negotiate all the different side menus to organise the info – sorry again again …..

Basically , when I publish these blogs – I can’t see them anywhere on my home page.

  • No need to apologise.

It looks like you had a different page set as your posts page. If you now click on Blog in the menu on the left, it will show the two posts you have created.

when I publish these blogs – I can’t see them anywhere on my home page.

You won’t, no. Your theme shows only Projects on the front page as you have it set up now, not posts. But people can view your posts by clicking on the Blog link in the menu now.

Phew ….. At last …I was trying stuff like that but I must’ve been using the wrong permutations …
So every time I want to add a new post to the blog I do it in the Blog menu then publish the page ?

  • So every time I want to add a new post to the blog I do it in the Blog menu then publish the page ?

If you want to add a new post you click on My Site ->Blog Posts ->Add. The moment you click the Publish button on the post, it will automatically appear on the Blog page on your site – you don’t need to add it there as well – and anyone who is following your site will also get the post in their email or their Reader feed.

Thank you , thank you , thank you ! …………..Everything seems in place now … except for … The contact page !!!
When I deleted the messed up one – I couldn’t find an empty template with the appropriate boxes to replace it with ….
I’m sure this must also be easy and I’m just missing an obvious situation ……

  • Right. Go to My Site ->Pages, find the contact page, and edit it. You can also use this link to got here directly:

    https://wordpress.com/page/gardnermuirhead.wordpress.com/289

While on that page, click the + icon in the toolbar, and select Contact Form option. That will open up the contact form builder so you can add the fields you want. This page includes more detailed instructions along with screen shots:
