  It’s possible to change the styles and colours via Appearance > Site Editor, using the styles editor as described here: https://wordpress.com/support/using-styles/

  I’d say one of the easiest things to do is to connect the site to Google Search Console: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-verification-services/, and this works better with a custom domain, and a domain is free for the first year of registration with a purchase.
