Block Editing
-
I loathe the proposed block editing system with a passion. If classic editor is not retained permanently for those wishing to use it I will be closing my WordPress blog and taking my monies elsewhere. I wondered how others feel about the changes or if it is just me who finds them a retrograde and unwieldy step.
-
I have struggled with changing my ways with the new editor. The lack of a duplicate button the loss of my categories below the letter L has been annoying.
Now I have to open an already published post, copy it and then paste it into a new blank blog post and then amend the content.
For me the delay is time, once I do that it is fine I can just fill in the boxes.
I would like to know the reason for the changes and what we gain from them.

Hi I have been with Word Press almost 3 years now but will be leaving if there isn’t a choice of staying with the current version. I pay for my site so will be cancelling my next subscription. A real shame but it is not for me. Hate it more than I can express!

I loathe the new block editor and cannot see that anything will be gained from it. If wordpress do not allow those of us who wish to to retain the classic editor, i too will be cancelling my paid subscription to wordpress for both my blogging and my author sites and moving elsewhere.

Hey
I can totally get that we need a bit of a learning for the new editor. But I am sure it will get better as you start using it and get a hang of it.
There is support document for the new editor in the link below:
Also there is an option to switch back to the classic editor if you wish to by following the steps below:
1. Open the post you wish to edit and click on the 3 dots on the top right corner
2. Scroll down and click Switch to Classic Editor at the bottom.Hope this helps :)

I agree with other bloggers. This new editor does not appear to be user friendly at all. I also know it is not compatible for those who use adaptive resources such as voice activation etc.
We live in a world where online/IT plays a major part in our lives, it is meant to be inclusive and accessible to all, no matter their skill level or disability. The new editor does not seem to meet these standards.
I notice folk are able to switch back to the classic edition but it also appears that it will be an enforced switch at some point? Could WordPress not at least make it optional on a permanent basis? -
I don’t like the new version either. I’ve had a go and it just hurts my head. I hope there will be the option to keep the classic editor if preferred otherwise I can’t see me sticking with WordPress, which would be a shame as I’ve found it to be very user friendly for the past three years.

I have been with Word Press over 3 years now but will be leaving if there isn’t a choice of staying with the current version. I pay for my site so will definitely be cancelling my next subscription if I’m forced to use the new editor. The current WP allows me to put my post together quickly and edit it just the way I like it. The new editor is awful not user friendly for the less techie bloggers like myself. I just want to write a post not mess about with blocks, why do I need coloured blocks? I’ve managed without them up until now. I appreciate technology changes but please consider giving WP users a choice, sticking with the old editor or moving to the new one

Thanks! We can only have classic editor for now – not permanently and I don’t see why we can’t opt for classic in the indefinite future- it’s already there!

This new editor feels so clunky and difficult to use. I can’t find some of the basic formatting tools that I prefer to use, simple things like underlining titles has become such a headache that I’ve given up. Took ages to work out how to resize an image and even then I still don’t think it looks right.
I appreciate that it may work for others and that indeed, they may like it. But for me, it’s become a pain. I cannot do the things I could previously do and its so far taken me over two hours to create a post, which used to take less than half of that. Can WordPress advise if the classic editor option will still be available in the future? Or will all users be forced to use this clunky and non user-friendly version? If the latter is the case, then I will no doubt be following the other bloggers and looking elsewhere for hosting.

The official quote from WordPress.com about this so far is: The classic editor will still be available for use for some time, though likely not indefinitely.”

Hi, @torres126
See here ;)
The classic editor will still be available on http://WordPress.com and as a plugin on self-hosted @WordPress sites, but the block editor will become the default once WordPress 5.0 is released next week.

Thanks folks.
You’re correct in that the block editor will soon be the default, AND that the classic editor will still be available for some time on WordPress.com.
To those posting complaints: thank you. We really do appreciate the feedback.
It’s most helpful if you’ll let us know what features are missing / awkward, how you were using them before and what’s getting in the way now. The more specific the better. Thank you!

I have a question. What is the point of it? From what I’ve seen of it, I’ve attempted to use it on three occasions and for now I’m completely abandoning it because I see no advantages, only disadvantages. There is nothing additional you can do using the new editor that you can’t do with the classic editor. Oh, you can make coloured blocks. Yuk, isn’t that a throwback to the old stagnant web pages of the early web? If it’s a retro look you’re going for then yay paragraphs in a coloured background but I for one am not.
What’s missing?
It seems to be completely missing from the Android app (good) but if you start a post on a mobile device you then have to make sure it doesn’t get converted to blocks if you want to continue your post in a web browser and vice versa is even worse. Start a post in blocks and try changing to classic. It loses most of your post.Missing – the box to simultaneously publish to WordPress with a link to your post shared to Twitter. That function isn’t there.
Missing – When choosing a photo there isn’t a link to Pexels, which lets face it is a fairly new and useful addition to WordPress and there it was gone!
Missing – at least on the theme I use. In the classic editor the author of the theme had given a tip on how to make photos within the blog post match the Featured image by adding one word ‘fancy’ to the HTML code for the photo. I’ve tried to do the same within the blocks editor but it has no effect on the photo. I tried putting the word in another bit but that sent it completely wrong and said there was an error in the code. It’s why I use a blogging platform, my ability to write CSS code is non existent. It does mean that if I use the blocks editor it will spoil the consistency of my blog posts because any subsequent posts would have to have a square photo where before they are well……fancy.
In a nutshell it’s too frustrating to be bothered with.

Thanks for that feedback! It is super helpful for us to have specific things.
re: Mobile, Twitter/Social, and Pexels, you are right. These are all great features that are still being finalised; they will be included soon.
re: image editing, that is a great question! Is that the Button, or Button 2 theme? I would like to test this out.

I just wanted to let you know that it was revealed yesterday that Gutenberg is going to be added to the WordPress apps in February 2019. :)

Thank you. I shall be sure to avoid the update for now. I love writing my draft posts on my phone and would be gutted to lose that facility to the new blocks editor.
