Block Editor

One the one hand, I’ve been using the “classic block” in the new version of the editor and it used to work fine until… the head part the editing tool no longer follows the page as I am scrolling down. That means if I want to use a different colour for my text, I need to scroll all the way back up to select it. My posts can get pretty lengthy and I change the colour of words multiple time so scrolling up is frustrating and a drastic loss of efficiency, why take that away? It was fine last week…!!! I just notice there was a new update… The interface looks different today.

On the other hand, if I don’t use the classic editing mode but the new blocks instead, I can’t even change the colour of a single word… it’s the entire paragraph that changes. It seems like we lost freedom in editing the way we want and it’s all very clumsy now.

It used to be a lot more user-friendly… everything I needed was in the editing block at the top of the page, one click away.

Please… PLEASE don’t take the classic editing mode away. Why would you have to do it anyways? As if everything that is old is not as good as the new, as if modern meant better. It may sound trivial but it’s essential for me to be able to change the colour of single words in my posts…

    Thanks

One more thing, when I choose a date to schedule the publication of a post, the date of the previous posts is no longer indicated on the calendar… I now have to go check it manually…

And why is there no auto-fill for the tags as there used to be?

I don’t know… this new editor has just made everything more time consuming…

I agree with you totally @raphaelsybo so far this is a backward step. Frustrating, time consuming and completely unreliable. I’m not using it any more because also the android apps haven’t been updated so now when reading books where I used to start writing my book review on my phone WP app as I read, I can’t do this any more if I’m going to use the block editor to do my full review, so it means me keeping notes on a different app then copy typing it to my blog. Good job I can touch type. Its hopeless this I totally agree with everything you have said.

  • @raphaelsybo, I’ve split your replies off into their own thread just to simplify addressing the different issues.

That’s excellent feedback, thank you. The Classic Block toolbar will remain visible if you edit/create a post using the block editor in WP-Admin, but it looks like that’s broken in the My Sites editor. I’ve reported that to our developers to fix.

if I don’t use the classic editing mode but the new blocks instead, I can’t even change the colour of a single word… it’s the entire paragraph that changes.

This option was removed in the Core WordPress software on WordPress.org, and it doesn’t look like they have any plans to add it back. But we are looking at the possibility to add it back specifically for WordPress.com. I can’t make any promises at the moment, but I’ve added your request to the open issue we have for this.

when I choose a date to schedule the publication of a post, the date of the previous posts is no longer indicated on the calendar… I now have to go check it manually…

Our developers are already working on adding this to the new editor.

And why is there no auto-fill for the tags as there used to be?

If you start typing a tag in the Tags box it should show you a list of previously used tags that start with the same letters. I actually used that to add tags on one of my own blog posts just two days ago.

Can you please tell me your site’s address, and an example of a tag you tried to use that didn’t show in suggestions so I can check it on my end?

Please… PLEASE don’t take the classic editing mode away. Why would you have to do it anyways?

We have no immediate plans to remove the classic editor, and it will likely stay available on WordPress.com for at least as long as the Classic Editor plugin for the self-hosted version of WordPress is still supported. The Core team has indicated that will be at least until 2022.

But eventually it will be deprecated as its code becomes too outdated to maintain any more. The reality is the languages in which websites and web building tools like the editor is built are constantly changing. If the software doesn’t change with it and continually reinvents itself, we’ll very soon find ourselves in a position where we’re too far behind to catch up. Should that happen WordPress will just quietly fade into obscurity, and we’ll all have to learn a completely new system for our websites.

So changes like these are inevitable. But feedback and bug reports like you’ve provided above help us to make the new versions as good as and better than the old versions.
