Block Editor/Classic Block Questions

I am unhappy with the change that abandoned the classic editor and remain hopeful that it can be reconsidered. However until then I suppose I will have to try to use the new editor and its Classic Block. In my initial use I have 2 questions I have not been able to resolve.

When I visit my site I have a “Write” button top-right and that is what I use when I want to create a new post. That takes me to the block editor now (ugh) and I then have to click on the + sign at the top left, search for “classic” in a left sidebar that then is opened, and then select that as my block editor style. This is where the questions arise.

    1. Is there any way once I hit that “Write” button to make the new editor default to Classic so I don’t have to go through all those steps every time?

    2. How do I get rid of that left sidebar once it appears?

I am hopeful the user experience will improve but these changes are several large steps backwards in my view. I find it inexplicable that those in charge would do such a thing to a user base.

  • Hi there – I’ll try to help answer your questions below.

    1. Is there any way once I hit that “Write” button to make the new editor default to Classic so I don’t have to go through all those steps every time?

There is not. We’re moving away from the classic editor. The “Write” button cannot be adjusted in this case.

    2. How do I get rid of that left sidebar once it appears?

I’m not sure I understand the left sidebar here. If that’s what you mean, could you take a screenshot so I can see the left sidebar you are referring to?

Use this for a screenshot if you need: https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/ – and upload the image to your media library so we can find it there and try to help.

We do appreciate your patience with the new editor and our support around it. I look forward to your reply.

Thank you for the reply. I resolved the issue of the left sidebar where you select a style of block once I realized that once you do, it then goes away if you hit the + sign. Perhaps unintuitive to use a + to remove something, but so it goes.

My initial question was not regarding how to select the Classic Editor since it no longer exists, sadly. It was meant to ask if it is possible to remove the steps of selecting a Classic Block using the Block Editor by making that a default once you hit the “Write” button. For that matter the same would apply to setting an initial default to any block style.

In playing with the Classic Block I encountered another problem I seem unable to resolve. Using the link function in the toolbar I chose to add a link to another post. A box appears where I enter the link address. I then want to mask that with some text to make that a hotlink. I hit the gear icon in the link popup box which allows me to edit this and enter the desired text, and hit “update” to insert the hotlink. However any subsequent text I then type following what appears in my classic block also becomes part of the hotlink text and I can see no way to turn it off. What am I doing wrong?

Currently it’s not possible to set a default block.

    Using the link function

For the link, instead try typing out the text you want to link, and then at any time just highlight that text with your mouse and paste the URL. The editor will convert that into a link.

Thank you. That worked although I could not find that method anywhere I looked. But it seems to work properly unlike the link function in the toolbar, unless there is another trick to using that of which I am unaware.
