Block Editor Contact Form: Possible Bugs
-
Hi,
I posted a question on the Feedback Thread for the Block Editor with some questions about the Contact Form block. staff-blorbo asked me to create a new thread because they may be bugs. This is the comment I posted on that thread:
#1: A possible bug. In a checkbox group or select one block, whenever I try to edit something on one line, it always ends up adding it to another. I cannot change the title of these checkbox/select blocks anymore; it always adds whatever I write to the last option.
For example, for this part:

I want to add a question mark to the question. (It will really annoy me if I can’t.) But whenever I try to do so, it adds the question mark after the ‘specify’ of the last option. This is REALLY IRRITATING ME. It’s been happening for months now but usually it ends up sorting itself out. Now I just can’t edit the title at all.
Also whenever I try to write a title for the first time, it adds one letter then adds to the first option. Though that’s now stopped because you have to add the first option manually, so that’s good.#2: Placeholder text. I used to be able to add/edit this and really want to. It will help me clarify the question I’m asking without having to put it all in the box’s title. I’ve also spotted some errors/things I want to change/remove in placeholder text that I wrote before something happened which meant I can no longer edit it. I don’t know if this is a bug or something that was purposefully changed but either way I personally would like it so I can add, edit and delete placeholder text. For example:

#3: The curse of the comma. Whenever I add a comma to a checkbox or select one option, it always causes them to become two separate options, so I have to remove the comma. I don’t like that.
(For example, with the first option on https://writingareapoetry.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/unable-to-edit-title.png. ‘How to create’ will separate itself from ‘add to and edit posts’.)
I understand that it can be used as a quick way to create a new option. But some of us like our sentences to be read easily, and commas help with that.#4: Links. Is there any way to link text in a title of a contact form block or within an option of a checkbox/select? (This question isn’t as important.)
#5: Whenever I type /text and hit enter it always adds a heading block?! Very confused about that, although again this isn’t as important because I can just select the ‘text’ option under it.
I’ve just searched for updates on my browser (Chrome) and haven’t found any. Any extensions I have are disabled.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to fix this?
Thanks!

1. Hm, this is working for me as desired. Would you please check with all browser extensions switched off?
2. Currently, we don’t have a way to add placeholders.
3. Hm, this is working for me as desired: https://d.pr/i/5cv2e2 would you please check with all browser extensions switched off?
4. We don’t currently have a way to add links within the checkbox elements.
5. That’s odd, it should be bringing up this: https://d.pr/i/2PbiUg maybe you’re adding the element outside of the form block?

Thank you staff-blorbo.
#2 and #4: Thank you for explaining this to me.
#1: I cleared cache and cookies, updated Chrome and checked extensions were disabled. I can now edit titles (the question now has a question mark which was the main thing I needed) but I can’t change what’s written in the options — it always ends up editing another one. I could delete all the options and start again but I don’t want to have to do this every single time I spot a mistake.
#3: The comma is still separating the options.
#5: I’m definitely adding it within the form block because the text option appears. It could be because I sometimes add headings within contact forms (to separate parts of the feedback/question etc.) although I don’t think I use them as regularly as text blocks (within forms anyway).
Thanks for all your help!

1. Sometimes the underlying code of a block can get so damaged that it’s not rendering properly. That’s something we’re working on, but when that happens, you may just have to re-do it. Before the Blocked Editor, it would affect the entire post, so at least that’s kind of an improvement. ;)
3. I just can’t reproduce that, that’s so weird. I may be looking at the wrong sub-block. Which one specifically are you using there?
5. That would make sense, the editor tries to surface frequently used blocks.

a single checkbox on a Checkbox Group will
Hm, that’s exactly what I’m having trouble reproducing. Do you have a different browser besides Chrome that you can check that under? And was the original test definitely with all extensions disabled?
-
I’ve now checked on Edge and Explorer, both of which have the same results.
The original test definitely was with extensions disabled.
The same thing happens on my phone, using Chrome. This is what the Checkbox Group option looks like in the editor:

And this is what it looks like on the website, in Chrome, Edge and Explorer:

Chrome version: 83.0.4103.116
Edge version (no extensions): 44.18362.449.0
Explorer version (I couldn’t find where extensions are listed): 11.900.18362.0
I’m using Windows 10. -
I’ve now tested on my phone and on Chrome on my computer while logged out, and while logged in to my writer0004 account. The same thing occurs. (I was checking while logged out on both Edge and Explorer.)
-
Oops, I forgot to mention — the link to the page I’ve been testing is https://testsitevolunteer.wordpress.com/, although this is happening across all my sites.
-
The code for that block is
<!-- wp:jetpack/field-checkbox-multiple {"options":["One, two, three"]} /-->
if that makes any difference. The code for another Checkbox Group that I’ve been having trouble with is
<!-- wp:jetpack/field-checkbox-multiple {"label":"Which Guideline(s) do you think this post is going against?","options":["#1 #2 #3 and/or #4","#5, #9 and/or #10","#6, #7 and/or #8","Other (please specify)"]} /-->
which previews like this: https://testsitevolunteer.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/writing-area-comma-website.png, although in the editor it looks like this: https://testsitevolunteer.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/writing-area-comma-editor.png.Could it be anything to do with the theme I’m using? This is happening on Stow, Libretto and Hever.

this is what it looks like on the website
Oh dear, yes that’s the difference. It does work fine in the editor, but I didn’t check on the published result, sorry!
So, in the editor: https://d.pr/i/SC5xBP
On the published page: https://d.pr/i/LXL2rZ
Fortunately, that finally pointed me in the right direction, and this is an already reported bug: https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/issues/2917
You can follow on there if you’d like, and our developers will get to this when they can.

You’re welcome! Sorry again that it took so long for the light bulb to go off in my head!
-
Sorry, please could I ask another question?
Although my Contact Form looks like this in the editor:

It displays like this at the end on the website (https://writingareapoetry.wordpress.com/join-our-community/):

Is this something to do with the theme I’m using (Libretto)? Because I copy and pasted it onto my test website (Stow) and it previewed fine, like this:

How can I sort this out? Should I re-create the form?
Thanks!

I don’t know what I did, but it looks like this has been sorted out now! I’m going to mark this thread as resolved again.

UPDATE: #1 is STILL happening and is REALLY beginning to annoy me again. I keep forgetting that commas mess up everything so add them, then move on to the next options, and only then do I realise I need to remove the commas (just one example). But then I can’t edit them! And I either have to delete all the options and start over, or reload the page and find where I was working, both of which take ages. It isn’t something to do with cache (just cleared) or extensions (disabled) or my device as reloading the page sorts it out. The code doesn’t change either from what I can see. What’s going on? How can I fix this? Is there a bug report?
-
#1 is STILL happening
Just to be clear, you’re referring to your first comment, about editing checkboxes?
It appears the cursor jumps back to the last-edited item each time one tries to edit something. It looks like there’s already a bug report open for this, so I’ve added your details to that.
