Block editor corrupted my post!

I changed one word and saved the post, and now it’s a mess. It seems to have trouble with the [code] segments or something.

    Very depressing. :(

But I can't leave it like that, so I'll be trying to fix it...

    Huh. Interesting.

I opened the post in the classic editor and did nothing but look at the HTML, which looked fine. Saving the (unedited) post in the classic editor fixed the problem, now the post renders fine.

The block editor seems to have done something to the post. I think I’ll stick with the classic.

  • Hi there,

Did you originally create this post in the classic editor? If so, I’d recommend continuing to use the classic editor to edit it.

The block editor doesn’t use the [code] shortcode, but rather has a code block for posting source code, and I don't think it can convert that shortcode into the code block automatically.

For new posts, you can see if the code block in the block editor will work for your needs.

Okay, thanks! I keep meaning to explore the new editor, but posts on my main blog (https://logosconcarne.com) usually start as copies of a template I created with the old editor, so unless I create a new template I’ll stick with the classic editor as long as I can.

FWIW, I never took to the v2.0 editor. I didn’t like how the Visual/HTML tab scrolled out of sight (I switch back and forth a lot). I also didn’t like how the ‘insert special character’ feature had to be explicitly closed. I rarely, like hardly ever, insert more than one character. The link editor also doesn’t work as nicely as it does in the classic editor.

The classic editor isn’t perfect — it doesn’t use the page well — but it worked a lot better for me than the v2.0 editor did. I’ve been leery of trying the new block editor because of my experiences with the v2.0 editor.

Having it corrupt a post the first time I try to use it isn’t encouraging.

I hope y’all will continue to support the classic interface. It still has features the newer version doesn’t. And lacks some features the new stuff has, so one ends up going back and forth. I still respond to comments on my blogs in the classic admin because it’s a rare place that lets me use all the HTML and CSS. The Reader strips a lot of stuff.

(I have noticed a bug in the classic editor recently. Switching to HTML and back causes the cursor handling to force the page scroll such that that current line is always pushed to the bottom of the window. Very very annoying!)

Anyway, thanks again. I’ll try to avoid the block editor for now.

p.s. Don’t mind me! :D I’m a retired software designer and coder. I’ve been writing code since 1975. I tend to have opinions about software… ;)
