Block Editor-It’s Really That Bad
-
@mattinker to find out a pagebuilder just works the same as Gutenberg? To find out most platforms switched to a pagebuilder aka Gutenberg …
-
The reason I’ve been with WordPress (.com and .org) for over ten years is because it worked better for me, as a writer, than anything else I had tried.
Now I want to leave Worpress. I want to move or even delete all of my sites so that I don’t have the frustration of trying to get through the current obstacles to record words. (Isn’t that supposed to be a priority?! WordPress no longer seems to care about users’ words….)
I feel as if I have to fight the new editor to get anything done. Some of my drafts are being deleted after saying it can’t be converted. A simple highlight of multiple paragraphs seem to be impossible. Getting through blog post settings takes longer than it used to, and I always end up feeling as if I’ve screwed up.
The problems blog posts and pages aren’t the only frustration, either. Ever since the Block Editor was forced on everyone, I have been unable to access all published WordPress pages. Some of the Admin features only appear as a white page on digital devices, for example.
Wordpress is now equated in my mind with “not functional”. I hate dealing with it anymore. The day is full of too many other frustrations that are higher priorities.
Of course, no where else seems to have improved their offerings for writers who don’t want to have to use WYSIWYG. That’s why I believe this move by WordPress is going to continue pushing people away from maintaining personal or (very) small business websites.

Hello there,
Many thanks for providing all of that information there – it’s quite insightful.
The red flag for me here, is the mention of a white page on certain pages, on certain devices. This makes me wonder if there’s something causing the experiences you’re getting with the block editor.
Are you able to tell me more about the devices in use, and also any browser extensions that are in use as well please.
This would be really helpful information to help us diagnose the woes you’re facing.
Many thanks in advance.

I did use Adblock, but a few days a go I recovered my Google Chrome page and up till now I didn’t put it back. But when I do is that a problem?
I do use Avast Secureline VPN. This protects (shielding) my IP address.
You talk about a white page, but I don’t have white pages. I have a problem whit the big white spaces that are caused by the images. With the Classic editor you can change that with Image Margin and that I miss that with Gutenberg. -
Hello there,
Many thanks for getting back to me.
I did use Adblock, but a few days a go I recovered my Google Chrome page and up till now I didn’t put it back. But when I do is that a problem?
I highly suspect that the Adblock is the cause of your woes here.
They are notorious for changing/adding/removing parts of a page via browser tools in error – thinking it’s an ad.
Avast, or IP masking, I seldom hear of being an issue.
I have a problem whit the big white spaces that are caused by the images.
Do you have a link to an example so that I can take a look please?
Many thanks in advance.

This is the pages I made resently with Gutenberg
https://spaanseverhalen.com/spanje/salamanca-provincie/And this is a page a made just before Salamanca, with the Classic editor, so you’re able to see the differences.
-
Hello there,
Many thanks for those examples.
With https://spaanseverhalen.com/spanje/salamanca-provincie/ – I notice that the images are set to be 25% of their size, which is causing the spacing issues described.
Was this set deliberately?
I suspect there may be some missing steps, or additional steps required, which is causing the issues you’re facing there.
Many thanks in advance.

I’ve put every image now in 100%, but in the published mode it stays all the same!?
In the concept mode it’s a dissaster the images are in the paragraf parts. Is it possible that it is something with the colums I use? I’ve put the paragraf parts to 70% and the image to 30%.
Thanks for all the help.

Hello there,
I notice you do have a number of layout blocks in use there, which do have responsive tendencies.
You may wish wish to experiment with a columns block, instead.
I’ve created a quick test and this is the result with a columns block: https://d.pr/i/OrvdIG
Please see more about about the columns block here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/columns-block/ you might find that it produces more desirable results for your site.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
Block Editor is total disaster!I hope you have someone like Product Manager or Product Owner who will listen to the feedback of WordPress users.
Remove this, or revert to previous build, PLEASE!!!!!
-
They don’t care what we want. Someone is clearly being paid off to use this new editor bologna. I know very little HTML (just the basics from the geocities years) and I had no issue using the old Classic editor. the block editor literally won’t let you change the font or picture size. I would never pay for wordpress. I am looking into a real website / blog service that isn’t as stubborn as this one.
-
Sadly, I must agree. The Block Editor is beyond awful. Just trying to find things is a chore and doing anything worthwhile takes twice as long as before. Thank goodness for the classic editor plugin because having to babysit my clients who were used to the old version is impossible. I’m hoping to find an alternative soon because I can see the writing on the wall and WordPress is going to continue ignoring the vast majority of it’s users and keep going down this disastrous path.

Actually I have now sorted this out. It’s not intuitive, but mixing the blocks with ordinary text and photo mode don’t work. Once you know it’s fine, but if you don’t it becomes a headache.
Steve.

Besides my earlier reply in this thread, WordPress.com published a support guide https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor-for-writers-bloggers/ which is quite helpful if your posts are mostly text with some images.

Hello,
I am here because I kept using the Classic Editor until it was removed and am now trying to be proactive and NOT use the Classic Editor block. It’s a mess and painful.
I am completely frustrated over a post where I tried to use the paragraph block and it made three different blocks for 3 different lines of text and I have to bold each line separately.
I also had trouble labeling a photo in a photo block – the label wrapped to the left.
A post that should take 10 minutes, now takes 20 minutes because my previous tags no longer pop up and I have to recreate them every time.
I really don’t care to waste my time detangling my messes that I create because the new system is not intuitive, nor well-designed. I am sorry if that hurts someone’s feelings – I am just trying to be honest. The website, as I understood it, is first a blog hosting site… then there was the website capabilities push which I tried and screwed up my site and followers so I had to go back and try to regrow my following. A push for podcasting is not going to help me.
What about focusing on intuitive, simple use tools that let simple idiots like me develop a body of work that people follow? Let the talented people who want the fluff-n-nutter extra’s buy them
I don’t know if other people are still irritated or have moved on —
I just think that it should be known that my Joy of developing blog posts is diminishing rapidly because of the changes.

Hi @dievca I see that your site uses an older theme called “Clean Home” which was released in 2011, but has since been retired: https://wordpress.com/theme/clean-home
Because this is an older theme no longer in active development, it may not fully support the new block editing tools, since it was created before such a thing existed. It sounds like this may be the root of your issue here:
I also had trouble labeling a photo in a photo block – the label wrapped to the left.
Where can I see this on your site. Can you point out or share the URL where we can see this? Happy to take a closer look.
I am completely frustrated over a post where I tried to use the paragraph block and it made three different blocks for 3 different lines of text and I have to bold each line separately.
You can get around this by holding Shift + Enter when you start a new line. Instead of starting a new Paragraph block, instead this will create line spacing in your current block, where you can style it as usual.
This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to use Shift + Enter to keep related text in a single block.
You can view the at this link: https://d.pr/v/Wsgk1R
Hope this helps!

Are you ever going to address the font that moves after you post something. I post a word and when I come back it has moved down 3 lines to the middle of the screen and there is no way to fix it. It won’t let me.
I agree that words don’t seem to matter to WORDpress anymore.
-
Hi @imissgeocities,
Where exactly is this happening in the editor? In the title or in one of the blocks?
Can you grab a screenshot so I can better understand what’s going on? You can use a service like https://snipboard.io/ to grab and share the screenshot.

I’m thinking the same. Gutenberg is not fit for purpose.
It seems to me that WP is fighting all its users and forcing something on them that they don’t like or want.
They’ve sucked the life out of blogging!
-
We are considering leaving too after many years. I keep asking why, when WP had such an efficient, easy to use editor, they would switch to this nightmare of technology. I do not have the time to do tutorials, read reams of technical instructions or to fiddle with this new editor to try and make it work. what we have gotten published looks a mess. Does anyone have any suggestions for more user friendly platforms?
