Block Editor: Pattern Previews slow loading in FF
-
Howdy! I’ve checked this on a couple of my sites, also in a Private browsing window with the same result. Advanced Dashboard Pages in use.
When opening the Block Inserter at the top left of my Editor screen, the patterns load very slowly and previews are generally absent, only pattern titles display. I waited until the browser “loading” indicator stopped whirling. (temporary screenshots)
Win10Pro PC using FF 88.0 (64-bit)
Tested also in Brave version 1.23.73 Chromium: 90.0.4430.85 (Official Build) (64-bit) – Loads fully; no issue
Tested also in MS Edge Version 90.0.818.42 (Official build) (64-bit) – Loads fully; no issue
Both in a regular browsing window. Thanks

I have the same setup for Win 10 and FF 88.0 (64-bit).
I think you maybe both have been aware of my serial here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/whats-to-be-said-i-wonder/I do not have any trouble with FF outside working on my site at WP.com.
FF uses its share of memory, don’t know about other browsers because I’ve always used FF. I do not have many add-ons. But – I do use an add-blocker, and the next time I go in for some edit I will turn that off – just to see if it makes any difference – it would surprise me though.
Thing is; there is not always trouble, but when it is – it’s pretty balderdash.
With a clean cache – or not, it can be different from time to time I edit.I’d be curious to know if justjennifer experiences the same from day to day.
Cheers

also in a Private browsing window with the same result
AFAIK browser extensions are disabled when in a Private browsing window.
Before shutting down my computer, I emptied my browser cache and cookies.
Logging in now, I disabled the two extensions I have installed (Evernote and LanguageTool) in a regular browsing window and loaded a new post Editor on a different test site and it is exactly the same behavior; the patterns, even the titles, load very slowly, and the previews not at all.
For the sake of completeness I also disabled the two default plugins that Mozilla installs Open H264 Video Codec and Widevine Content Decryption Module, with no change in behavior.
Again noting that I have Advanced Dashboard Pages enabled.
I switched now to the default unified navigation, opened a new Post on a different test site and unfortunately the behavior is exactly the same.
But – I do use an add-blocker, and the next time I go in for some edit I will turn that off – just to see if it makes any difference – it would surprise me though.
Ad-blockers are the source of many issues here on WordPress.com and for that reason I do not use an ad-blocker extension.
-
Also noting that turning off FireFox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection (standard) for the Editor window did not improve block pattern loading.
-
This morning I tried all patterns and every one of them loaded quickly with all example images, both in block inserter and on to the test page.
I did not turn off ad-blocker and had not cleaned out cache from yesterday.Something to ponder about……..
-
Indeed, thanks for letting us know. :)
Maybe there’s an undersea telecom cable loose somewhere.
-
Would you mind setting up a test page with the content giving you trouble?
I’d like to copy/paste it exactly over to my test site so I can safely knock it around with Firefox.
-
Thanks staff-blorbo Perhaps I wasn’t clear.
No content is giving me trouble, only the Patterns tab of the Block Inserter.
With or without any content in the Editor itself, the Patterns tab is very slow to load and is mostly Pattern titles without their previews.
Here’s another screenshot

I’ve added the full-size screenshot to the earlier screenshots located here.

Hey @justjennifer,
Hmmm…I just tested this on FF 88.0 on Win 10 as well and wasn’t able to replicate the issue on my end. But, there is definitely an issue there from what I see in the screenshots you provided.
Was this the first time you opened up the pattern section from the block inserter since the unified navigation update? Do you remember the last time the pattern section worked as expected for you?
I’ll definitely look into this on our end and see if we have received any other reports of this.
Thanks,
-

I think it might be, but given that Pattern previews load quickly in both Brave and MSEdge, and there was no improvement in FF when I flipped to the default (Calypso-based) navigation, it feels to me like it might a browser issue.
Do you remember the last time the pattern section worked as expected for you?
Honestly speaking, no. I’m just now starting to work with them more on a regular basis. :D
Thanks for checking.

justjennifer;
If you already did this just ignore:Uninstall FF and install a fresh copy of it?
-
Already thought about it. That was going to be the inevitable next step. Thanks. :)
Edited to add: I’m currently working my way through this support article https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems

In the end it didn’t come to reinstalling FF.
As far as I can tell, the culprit was the Language Tools extension. Once I removed it entirely, the Pattern previews showed up in the Post Editor, though the Query tab is still a little wonky.
Thanks everyone for your patience and assistance with this. Cheers!
-
Glad you got it sorted! So, disabling the language tool extension alone did not solve the issue. Interesting.
-
I wish. It is having it’s ups and downs.
After uninstalling both extensions and refreshing FF88, I’m still having issues. But let’s leave it for now. I’ll keep my eye on it over the next week. My head hurts. :D
-
Just to circle back on this…I’ve downloaded the desktop app for Windows (v6.14) and the block patterns load in the Post Editor completely and quickly. (Calypso only since wp-admin forces the default browser to load instead.)
Thus far in Firefox I’ve:
- tried both calypso and wp-admin; no difference
- tried in a private browsing window; no difference
- removed all extensions; no difference
- refreshed Firefox; no difference
- tried in Firefox’s troubleshooting mode; no difference
- added wordpress.com to tracking exceptions; no difference
Javascript and 3rd party cookies are enabled. I regularly log out and empty my browser cache and cookies.
Given that it seems Firefox is exclusively affected by this issue, likely since v87 and I currently have v88 installed, I don’t have much to go on. However, WordPress.com is the only site where I have an issue with elements of the page loading like this (loading slowly and then stalling).
The very last thing I can do is what @petitpoisvideos suggested above and that is completely uninstall and then reinstall Firefox. Unless I can find a way to back up my browsing history (which I rely on), I won’t be doing so.
Any further help or suggestions appreciated, but it looks like I’ll be using the desktop app or a different browser going forward. Life’s too short…

Hi Jennifer,
if you get to the point of uninstalling FF, go for a “clean install” (again).
Be sure to get rid of the old FF stuff in app data before installing the new copy.
I’m sure you know how to get rid of leftovers.
Possibly “no difference”, but worth a try? -
(How do you edit a post here?)
Just a thought; you probably know you can export bookmarks to html – and then import again from the same html.
……….not the same as history of course, seems that one is out of reach……….
-
It took a full uninstall/reinstall of Firefox to fix this.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and patience.
