Block Editor – Pinning Top Toolbar in Firefox

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi all, I mostly use Firefox 79.0 (64-bit) and sometimes Chrome 84.0.4147.105 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Win10Pro v1909 when creating or editing my posts in the block editor.

In Firefox I don’t seem to be able to pin the toolbar to the top of my editor screen for more than that single editing session. Each time I open the editor, I have to pin it again.

Is there some way to pin the top toolbar and keep it there in Firefox?

While I routinely delete my browser cache and cookies at the end of the day, I’ve also tried logging out of WPcom without doing so. No difference in Chrome; the toolbar is anchored at the top of the editor when I return to edit.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Jennifer,

That option is properly persisting for me between browser sessions. I tested in Firefox on both Windows and MacOS. Even after clearing the browser cache it still persists.

The only way I could get it to un-set itself is by manually deleting WordPress.com cookies, so I’m guessing something is preventing the cookie that saves this preference from being set in your browser. Are you using any privacy add-ons that might be doing this?

Hey Herman, the only thing I have in Firefox is Firefox’s own enhanced tracking protection tools, and that is set to Standard for all sites. The only other add-on is Evernote.

  • I’m experiencing similar to Herman under Firefox 79.

How about with Firefox’s enhanced tracking protection off?

I’ll give that a try later and report back.

I did a little more testing last night and only changed the on-site Privacy setting at https://wordpress.com/me/privacy from off to on and that seemed to help, until I logged out and cleared my browser cache in FF.

So here’s what I know now after testing.

Adding an exception for wordpress.com to FF’s built-in enhanced tracking protection made the top toolbar stick until I logged out and also cleared my browser cache and cookies. The exception for wordpress.com is still listed in FF.

I also tried after turning the on-site Privacy back on as well. No difference. The top toolbar isn’t retained.

Let me know if I can provide you any other information.

  • until I logged out and also cleared my browser cache and cookies

From what I’ve been able to find that preference is saved via a cookie, so clearing the browser cookies at the end of your session will un-set that preference.

So it sounds like Firefox’s tracking protection might have been blocking that cookie from being set in the first place.

It seems like it could be. At the same time, I’m unlikely to create an exception for WordPress.com if pinning the top toolbar is the only feature that’s affected. I’ve never had an issue with other features, such as sharing buttons, twitter, etc., which other users have reported having issues with.

Will keep an eye on this going forward and contact if needed. Thanks for all the assistance. :)

And yet another caching issue. :/
