Block editor/slow loading

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m recently coming back to blogging on a laptop and reviving and old blog. I’ve been find using my phone to write on another blog.
I don’t want to use my phone on the old blog as I find it easier to write on a laptop, however, I’m having trouble adjusting to the new block editor. I don’t like it, it seems difficult when all I want to do it write.
Is there a tutorial available for it?
I did write using the ‘old’ version of the editor the other day and wanted to quickly edit something so decided to do it on my phone and it was unsupported content on the app.
It’s also REALLY laggy and slow on my laptop. Couple the lag with the block editor and I’m really struggling to enjoy blogging.
Do I have to use the block editor to be able to use the app? Or was that just random?
I’m looking for any insight into the problem with the lagging and any enlightenment into working the block editor please.

  • Hi @flowbeth, thanks for the feedback. I know the designers and developers are trying to make writing flow easier for block users, so if you can tell me specifically what’s getting in your way, I’d be happy to file an issue (or add a note to an existing issue) so your specific needs are being noted.

There are tons of Gutenberg / Block Editor tutorials available. Generally speaking though, you should be able to just type, or just copy and paste plain text if that’s what you prefer to do. If you’re running into trouble with that, send more specifics and we’ll help how we can.

Regarding the app, which phone do you use? I think there’s likely an option to switch to the classic editor there. I can confirm.

It’s also REALLY laggy and slow on my laptop.

Everything? Hmmmm. Any more information you can send about the laptop, what’s being laggy and slow, etc, would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

    Hi, thank you for responding.
What I’m struggling with is generally using it, finding options I would usually use to edit the text such as changing it to a header. Which I did locate eventually but took me a while.

I used the photo block and it wouldn’t allow to me upload directly within the block, it came up with an error message. I was able to select a photo from my media album. I usually add a description to my photo and while editing a particular post it kept switching between the old version and the new version. So one image’s description was done using the old version, the other two were done using the block editor and the description comes up as regular text beneath the image, as opposed to the smaller italic description that would usually come up.

Here’s the post so you can see what I mean; https://kaboodlemum.wordpress.com/2019/08/15/introducing-kaboodlebaby-2/
If you scroll down you’ll see the difference between an image further up and some towards the end.

In terms of lagging, the whole site is generally slow, where as any other site I visit or anything else I do on the laptop isn’t. It’s a new laptop I bought at the beginning of the year specifically for blogging.
The biggest issue is load times on the site and text not appearing as I am typing. It takes a good 20/40 seconds or so to catch up to where I’ve typed to.

I’ve so far not been able to locate the spell check, which I usually toggle on when I’ve finished to to make sure there aren’t any mistakes while I read over what I’ve written.

My phone is an iPhone 8 which is a week old and up to date with all iOS software and I’m using the most recent version of the WordPress app.
I will have a look in the settings and stuff to see if I can work it out a bit better.

I’ll keep playing around on the site but do hope that it speeds up soon because it’s very frustrating working on something so slow lol

    Thanks again for the help.

  • Hi there,

What browser are you using as this might be the case? Have you tried a different browser and see if it works better?

Also, if you have any security/ad-blocking browser extensions I recommend disabling them to see if they’re causing the lag.

I am using Microsoft edge. But i will try another browser when next online.
I don’t think I have anything like that on my browser but I’ll also check it out. Thank you

  • Hi there,

Just a few things from your previous comment:

I used the photo block and it wouldn’t allow to me upload directly within the block, it came up with an error message.

What exactly is the error message?

If it’s a general “HTTP Error”, try clearing your browser cache – that usually clears up that particular error which is not specific to the block editor, but which comes from the WordPress media library itself.

I usually add a description to my photo and while editing a particular post it kept switching between the old version and the new version. So one image’s description was done using the old version, the other two were done using the block editor and the description comes up as regular text beneath the image, as opposed to the smaller italic description that would usually come up.

Image captions in the classic editor and image captions in the block editor are created in different ways. For older themes, like Sela which you’re using, that can lead to this problem, because the theme was never designed to add styling for the kind of code that the block editor uses. This means the theme follows the default styling provided by the block itself instead.

To prevent this happening it would be required to update the theme to add support for the new code introduced by the block editor, but Sela has been retired which means it no longer gets updates for improvements like this.

Sela has been replaced by a new theme called Stow. It has the same basic design, but was created specifically for the block editor, so you might consider giving that theme a try:

    https://wordpress.com/theme/stow

Else, for consistency in your image captions at least, you’d need to stick with the classic editor or the classic block in the block editor for adding those, rather than the image blocks.

The biggest issue is load times on the site and text not appearing as I am typing. It takes a good 20/40 seconds or so to catch up to where I’ve typed to.

Can you please clarify, is this in the editor, on the site itself, or both?

Please see if clearing the browser cache helps. Also try clearing the computer’s DNS cache – your operating system’s help section should contain instructions for that. Often slowness is caused by a file or a process becoming stuck in a cache somewhere, and it can often affect only one site while all others work fine.

I’ve so far not been able to locate the spell check, which I usually toggle on when I’ve finished to to make sure there aren’t any mistakes while I read over what I’ve written.

We retired WordPress.com’s built-in spell checker a few months ago. Most browsers now come with spell check tools built in, and there are browser extensions like Grammarly that you can use as well, so we stepped back from trying to maintain our own spell checker on top of better tools that already exist.
