Block Error Message

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. First of all, I’m new to WP, so I’m still learning about blocks and themes, etc.
I have a free account with the Stow theme.
Every time I click the Advanced or Color Settings of a block, this message appears: “This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed.” It seems if any tab of each edit area is closed, and I try to open it, the message pops up.
The only plugins I have are the Jetpack ones that come with a free site.
What should I do? Everything was fine with my site until two days ago. I don’t know what happened.
    Thanks!
    ~ Amber

    What is your site URL?

Hi there, is this for https://amberdaulton.wordpress.com/ or a different site?

    Please let us know:
    1. what browser and browser version you are using to write your posts
    2. whether you write your posts online in the browser window or some other way

    Thanks.

    Yes, it’s https://amberdaulton.wordpress.com/
I’m using an out-of-date version of Firefox 52 on an old XP desktop. There’s a problem with the computer in which it won’t let me update to a newer Firefox browser. I’ve tried and tried with no luck. Internet Explorer doesn’t work at all, Chrome won’t download, and I haven’t tried to download any other browsers.
Sometimes I write the post online in the browser window (in WP), and I sometimes I do so in a Word doc. Either way, I can’t edit any blocks that’s not already opened in the edit window (I hope that makes sense).
It’s strange. The block editor worked great a few days ago, and then it started having problems.
    Thanks!

Hello again, I don’t know how backwards compatible the block editor is given that it relies on modern technologies and it sounds like your setup is a much older OS and browser.

This thread has been flagged for Staff to see if they can suggest something, other than updating your setup. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

  • Hi Amber,

I used Browserstack to emulate Firefox 52 on my end, and it looks like that’s the problem, yes. That browser is simply too old to support all the features the block editor uses. I’m afraid that’s not something we’ll be able to fix.

You will either need to use the classic block, or else you can use the classic editor in WP-Admin to create your posts:

That said, please consider upgrading/replacing your computer. I know it’s a lot of money to do that, but using Windows XP is really not safe – every time you connect that computer to the internet you’re placing all your data on it at risk, because that software hasn’t had any updates or security patches in years.

Thank you to everyone who responded.
I’m fine with using the Classic Editor, but I heard that was going to be discontinued in 2022 in lieu of the Block Editor, so I was trying to get used to the blocks now. Is it really going to be fazed out?
I wish I could get a new computer, but my budget is tight.
I’ve downloaded both Safari and Opera, various versions of each that’s compatible with XP, and those kind of worked. Unfortunately, every time I went to a known, trusted website, an invalid root certificate warning kept popping up. So I deleted those, and I’m stuck with Firefox.
    Again, thanks for trying! :)

  • The classic editor should be supported on WordPress.com at least for as long as the Classic Editor plugin is officially supported and maintained by the community on WordPress.org. I have no way to say if/when that support might stop, though.
