“Block inserter” doesn’t load in all the blocks or takes forever to do so.

When I try to add blocks on a page or post, I click on “browse all” or on the “block inserter” on the top left corner, which should open all the blocks. Instead, most of the time it opens just the first section of “TEXT” blocks and takes forever to load the rest or it doesn’t load at all. I can manually search for the blocks, but sometimes I want to browse them and I also don’t know every block by memory.

So is it just a loading issue where my laptop takes too long to load it in? I mean it’s an old laptop, but everything works. It’s a very specific thing to struggle with in my estimation. Or is it something else that could be improved or fixed?

  • Hey there @maxteernstra, thanks for the feedback.

Can you confirm whether you have the same issue on all of your sites, or which are affected? And, do you see the same issue regardless of browser?

It’s possible it is a performance issue with your older laptop, but if we can rule out other issues, let’s do that. Then we can file an issue or feedback with the right team as needed.

    Hey, thanks for replying.

I just checked on bekroondekaarten.wordpress.com and maxteernstra.wordpress.com and the issue only occurs on bekroondekaarten. I also checked on Firefox and Chrome. This does not change it, the same issue still occurs on both browsers.

I am building bekroondekaarten right now, so it has more content and blocks, pages, posts active. But even if everything is fully loaded in, the block inserter remains unreliable. It could still be my laptop, but not sure.

  • Hmm. I wasn’t able to duplicate this yet. Can you share the exact steps you’re using?

    • Editing which post or page?
    • What options are you clicking to bring up the block browse options?

    Thanks in advance.

I have mainly been editing the homepage, which is where this issue became apparent.

    • I go to bekroondekaarten.wordpress.com/
    • I scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to edit it.
    • Then I click the “Toggle block inserter” button at the top left corner of the editing page.

The issue also occurs for me when I navigate to it in a different way. I am now testing whether other pages work better. It seems like an empty page like bekroondekaarten.wordpress.com/ikbenbekroond/ works better.

  • Gotcha. It does seem to load up pretty quickly for me (my laptop is from 2020), so it could be a matter of your laptop just struggling with some of the code on a page.

One thing you could do if other pages are fine:

    • Try the block inserter and add your blocks or patterns on another, blanker page
    • When you’ve got what you want, copy code, then paste it in the right place on the real front page.

Want to see if that helps? That way you’re only loading up alllll the blocks when the page isn’t already requiring more of your laptop.

You might also experiment with Patterns to see if you see any difference.

Thank you for testing it. This kind of clarifies that it’s probably my laptop.

That’s a good idea. I will probably use a blank page to just scroll through all the blocks and when I have found the one I want, I can manually search it in the real front page.

However, once my website is fully published and being visited by people, I should implement your idea in any case. So I will make a test / demo page right now!

  • Cheers @maxteernstra. If you need further help on this, just let us know.
