block vs classic

  • Unknown's avatar

This all continues to be a nightmare. Even though I had separated paragraphs into the blocks I wanted, when I went to put photos in I had to delete the paras and start again. It’s quite unreal that there was such a good system before, and it has been made worse by supposed progress.

In spite of your “click anywhere” advice, the classic panel still keeps disappearing.

Why not just have two styles running on two formats? One is classic. Period. One is block. Period. Like having different font styles on a computer – you don’t have to keep changing them with every paragraph?

I have just had to re-do the whole blog post cos of the inconvenience of this new system that jumps photos around all over the place and won’t let me be flexible in my editing.

Sorry, I know it is not your fault personally, but in this day and age where it is impossible to get in touch with a human for feedback, it seems that all the people responsible for all the angst are hiding under the protection of the internet.

I have spent two hours on this one post now. For nothing.

    Question, not a rant!
And why is that when I last used upload for photos, they also went into the gallery, but today they are not? Can you remind me again please where to see the layout of the post eg block block para para image block etc

    Thank you

Hi again, it’s not “click anywhere” but click back into the Classic Block, if that is what you are using.

Can you remind me again please where to see the layout of the post eg block block para para image block etc

At the top left of the Editor workspace there’s an icon that looks like a drunk hamburger menu, three offset lines. That’s the Block Navigation. https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/#block-navigation If you are using the Classic Block exclusively to write your posts, it will only show you Classic there.

And why is that when I last used upload for photos, they also went into the gallery, but today they are not?

I’m not sure what you are asking here. In order to add images to a gallery, you have to add them. They aren’t automatically added when you upload them.

    @rovingrodge,

How do I get out of block so I can use the old classic version?

Hi! Via a staff member, WordPress.com has recently stated the following policy change:

Everyone, regardless of site/account age, can once again switch to the Classic Editor in the Dashboard.

So if you prefer the classic editor, as I do, you may gain access to it via the WP-Admin dashboard. The WP Admin Dashboard support page describes a couple of ways to access the dashboard and provides a little bit of information about some of the features available there. What the support page fails to disclose (other than the mention of Quick Draft) is that you may also create, edit, and manage posts, pages, the media library, menus, header images, categories & tags, and much more, from the WP-Admin dashboard. You may not need the Block Editor at all. I don’t.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, we discussed that earlier in this thread, but at that time, @rovingrodge didn’t have the Classic Editor option.

    @rovingrodge
everyone now has the option in WP Admin https://rovingrodge.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php but you need to click the arrow on the Add New button and choose Classic Editor.

Keep in mind that is a temporary solution as Staff have already advised that the Classic Editor will eventually be retired. So if you choose to write in WP Admin’s Classic editor, I encourage you to open up a test post or page and start dabbling in the Classic block https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/ or the full Block Editor https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/ and you’ll be ahead of the game when the Classic Editor is finally retired.

    Thank you, Jennifer :-)

    PS Drunk hamburger???!!!

That image has cheered me up!!

It is unbelievable that a well-working system be substituted by something that messes up with all efforts to keep an organized blog, mainly because there seems to be currently no constraint in terms of coding to keep the old editor.

What is the point of imposing it this rashly – should I say ‘perversely’?

Now, close to a half of an old post I wanted to edit has vanished, and there is no “temporary solution” available to edit it in the Classic Editor.

    What to do, then?

  • @walreis missing content is an issue we would like to look into and report to our engineers if need be. Can you tell me more about the issue you are having?

What is the URL to the “old post” in question? Can you describe what content is missing? Was it missing before you edited it, or is it the case that it was missing after you made edits, and if so, what edits did you make?

    Thanks for the additional info

    Thanks for the reply, staff-totoro.

I didn’t finish the editing, since I take care to never hit the update button before checking the preview, in which the whole final half of said post is missing, exactly as it shows in the editor.

  • @walreis,

    Thanks.

Please open your own support request at https://wordpress.com/help/contact, and include the information you gave here, and we can help you there.

We cannot effectively troubleshoot issues with an individual site in a thread like this where so many different users are involved.

And once again I say, why on earth is there seemingly no way to do a tiled gallery of more than 3 images in a group, and why can’t tiled galleries have captions.

In the old format, both were possible, which shows it CAN be done. It was useful, it was effective, so why change it???

  • Unknown's avatar

FYI – JustJennifer – whenever I upload photos into my blog, it always automatically puts them into the gallery too. No need to do it separately…

  • Noting the request for tiled gallery captions. Our developers and designers are already working on this, so I’ve just added your request to that issue to help nudge it along.

And, you should already be able to add more than three images, so if you’re having trouble with that, please open a thread. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey thanks for that!

    Much appreciated :-)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there

I still cannot get more than 3 photos in a group – unless the selection of photos for the tiled gallery numbers, say, 10, in which case I get a group of 4. But I can’t get, say, all ten in one gallery unless I choose the Postcard Rack Effect of the ordinary gallery…. Euwwww…

@rovingrodge – first of all my apologies as I did not see your reply to me above.

Because this thread has gotten really long and is marked resolved, my suggestion would be to start a new forum thread for the gallery issue. Please link to your post or page where you are trying to insert that gallery, even if it is a draft, so that Staff can check it out. Add the MODLOOK tag to your thread to get Staff attention.
