Blockbase theme defaults to 404 template
-
I installed the Blockbase theme. But when I create a new post, under the Post settings on the right, the Template name listed is “404.” It should be “Single Post.”
In the theme Editor, I see all the templates listed: 404, Single Post, Page, etc.
How can I assign the Single Post template to all new Posts I create? And how do I assign a new template to a page or post?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I have taken a closer look at your site but for me when I try to start a new post, I do see the correct Single Post template loading, I don’t seem to see a 404 option listed, even if I look for it in the dropdown.
You can see a video of my screen at this link to confirm: https://d.pr/v/TBG14N
Is it possible that you are seeing something different than I am? Is this an issue that you were having but is no longer happening? Thanks for the additional info!

Thank you, Jerry. Here’s what I experience: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3d344vn9skkkfbb/Wordpress.mp4?dl=0
I hope you’re able to access and play the video.

OK, I can confirm that I see the issue on your site too, but I can’t reproduce it on any of my test sites.
Do you see the Single Post template at https://christianmediumorg.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=gutenberg-edit-site&postType=wp_template ?

Hi Lee,
Thanks for confirming that.
Can you please check if clearing your browser cache makes any difference?
https://wordpress.com/en/support/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache
Also check if the same thing happens if you log into your account using another browser.
If we try to create a new post on your site from our end, we’re seeing the Single Post template set as the default template, so this doesn’t appear to be something coming from your site itself. Something stuck in you browser’s cache might explain this, so it would be good if we can rule that out.

I’ve been using Firefox. But I cleared my cache, logged out and back in, and I still get the same results (404 is the default template).
I logged in using Safari, which I’ve never before used to work on my site, and I get the same results there too (404 is the default template).

Hi again,
Out of curiosity, are you able to run into this same issue if you visit WordPress.com from your mobile device, and start a new post that way?
Because we’ve had difficulty in replicating this issue on our end, we would like to rule out that your computer is not the issue. If you don’t have a mobile device to use, a different computer would also work.
Additionally, I noticed that you may be using an older version of the Mac OS on your computer. Do you have the option to update to the latest (OSX 11 Big Sur or OSX 12 Monterey) and see if that helps resolve the issue?
Thanks!

Here’s what I’ve tried so far on my MacBook Pro, which is at Monterey 12.3.1 (21E258):
- Firefox with cache cleared defaults to 404 template
- Safari with cache cleared defaults to 404 template
On a Windows machine that I’ve never logged in to WordPress.com before:
- Firefox defaults to 404 template
- Chrome defaults to 404 template
On my iPhone 12:
- Duck Duck Go defaults to 404 template
- WordPress app does not have an option that displays the template in use
I’m wondering if the order of templates in the Editor makes a difference. When I open the Editor and click the Templates page, the Blockbase theme templates are listed in this order:
- 404
- Index
- Single Post
- Page
- Search
- Header and Footer Only
- Blank
- Footer only
- Archive

Hi there,
This is usually the case when you edit a template (I see you edited the first four) so they are displayed at the top of the list, out of their usual order. This does not seem to be related to the issue at hand.
However, after a bit of digging, I see that this same issue was reported on one of our other themes. It seems based on that report that the editor shows the ‘404’ template incorrectly, but once you publish the post, the correct ‘single post’ template is shown.
Edit: We are working under the assumption that the editor is trying to display the title “Single Post template” in the editor interface, and is unable to find it. This results quite literally in a small 404 error on that interface tab, and does not indicate it’s trying to load the “404 template”
With this in mind can you try publishing a test post? After you publish if you revisit the post is it still using the 404 template? Or does it show the Single Post template as it should? Thanks!

Ok, so I created a new post, and it showed 404 under the template dropdown. But I published it, and it seems to be using the Single Post template and not the 404 template. When I go back and edit the published post, the template dropdown shows Single Post. Strange. There’s some kind of bug under the covers, but it seems to be fixing itself after publication.

Thanks for trying that.
It does indeed appear to be the same issue that we’ve found with another theme, so I’ve added your report, and your theme, to that open bug report.
I’m not able to tell you when this will be fixed, but at least you’ve now confirmed this appears to be only a “cosmetic” error, and doesn’t affect how the posts are actually published.
If there’s an update on the bug report we’ll let you know. Otherwise, please don’t hesitate if you run into any further issues on your end :)
