Blocked from following others
-
It appears that I am not able to follow any more bloggers. I followed quite a few in a short time as I just discovered this function and wanted to catch up with those that I have been reading outside of wordpress and those that followed me. For future reference, how many people can we follow total and how many can we add at once?
-
There is a metered timeout on that, we do not release specifics on it though.
You should be able to follow a few more after 24 hours.
-
Thanks, but it has been over 24 hours and I still can’t follow anyone new. Also, can I get any idea of how many more I can follow after it opens again? I just don’t want it to happen again.
-
We do not release specifics on how the timeout operates.
What is the URL of the site you’re trying to follow, and what error do you see?
-
It is for any site. I’ve tried multiple. Example below.
“Sorry, there was a problem following http://ashortbooklover.wordpress.com. Please try again.”
-
Ok, first please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.
-
I use Firefox and it is up to date. I’m using 77.0.1. I’ve cleared my cache and cookies and I’m not running any extensions or add-ons. Still doesn’t work.
-
Thanks for checking on that. Looks like you hit the metered time out on follows 4 different times. I think that’s why the 24 hour window didn’t work like we typically see. I’ve re enabled follows for you this one time. We won’t make another exception so please be careful to limit spam-like behaviors.

Hi, please try waiting a while then following someone again.
Do not use follows for anything except a genuine desire to read that site’s content. For example:
– Do not follow as a way to get people to look at your site, or to build your own followers. This is spamming, and the system will block you for that. Given that you hit a limit 4 times, I’m guessing you noticed you were being stopped before resuming the same activities.
– Do not follow merely to “follow back” . If you’re taking time to review a blog’s content before deciding to follow it, you shouldn’t run into trouble.
In fact I’d recommend against following sites because of a single article on a subject. Instead, follow that subject if you’d like.
While we did unblock you on our end, there may be a hard limit with how many times you can be blocked like that before you’re blocked permanently, in which case we won’t be able to help you.
-
By the way, the note on spamming goes for any activity that could seem like disingenuous behavior meant to advertise your site, including likes, comments, etc.
If you are trying to build a following, write good content and engage authentically.
-
I appreciate the advice and realize you are protecting the community. I now understand your policies and only reached out because I was told that I could now follow but could not and it had been almost a week. Please remember, I am a customer and an adult and don’t need to be scolded like a child. I also don’t appreciate the innuendo that I am disingenuous, spamming, and not writing good content. Like anyone, I am doing my best to build a following and that means experimenting and exploring. No one will know that I have content unless I reach out and interact. As other staff stated above, the specifics of your metered time out are not released. So please tell me how was I supposed to know? I interacted in a manner consistent with other social media like Twitter or Facebook. I will stop interacting with your community and will probably begin looking into other website building platforms that have more courteous and patient customer service.
-
I noticed you have four strikes for follows and one for likes. Did you receive a message when those instances occurred?
-
I only received an error.
“Sorry, there was a problem following ***. Please try again.”
So I tried again. I only found out that there was a meter when I reached out about not being able to follow because I kept getting the above error. If I had known that there was a meter, I wouldn’t have tried to follow so many. Now, I’m just finding out that there is a meter on the likes too.
-
Alright. Let us know if you have more questions, and please do avoid any rapid likes/follows/etc.
