Blocked transfer of a domain name

    Hello,

I recently took a premium subscription and made a domain name transfer request (maximedaviron.com) from my old host (Squarespace) to WordPress.com. Subsequently, finding that the subscription I had taken was not satisfactory to me, I terminated it and canceled my transfer request for my domain name.

Therefore, I have to make a new transfer to my new host. Unfortunately, the transfer status appears to be “blocked” by WordPress (Squarespace assured me that they can’t do anything). So I find myself stuck with an unusable domain name, waiting for the unlock of the transfer. This is preventing me from resuming construction of my website, which is vital to my business, and every lost day is detrimental to me.

Could you do something to unblock the transfer?

Thank you in advance for your help, regards.

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

I’m afraid it’s not possible to unblock that transfer due as it is ICANN imposed.

In the meantime, it is possible to point the domain to the new hosting provider via custom DNS settings.

Who is the new hosting provider?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Thank you for your answer. I’m not sure to understand why it is blocked (and for how long ?), as I’m a bit new to this.

My new hosting provider is o2switch.

    Regards.

It’s an ICANN rule: “Please note that you may not transfer your domain name to a new registrar within the first 60 days after initial registration, or the first 60 days after a transfer.”
ICANN helps coordinate the Domain Name System (DNS), often referred to as “the phone book of the Internet” because it matches domain names with appropriate IP address numbers. ICANN also operates part of the DNS, and manages IP addresses and other protocol numbers.

Thank you. So I can’t start to build my new website before 60 days ?
Or is there a way to use my domain name anyway, but with my new hosting provider ? Wouldn’t that cause some issues ?

You can build your website now, you just can’t transfer the domain registration to another domain registrar until the ICANN imposed 60 day time frame has expired.

In the meantime, you can update the domain nameservers here to point to your new site hosting by following the steps here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/change-name-servers/#changing-name-servers-to-point-away-from-wordpress-com

Your new hosting provider should have the new nameserver information that you can use. Please note that changes to DNS will take anywhere from 12-48 hours to fully complete across all the servers on the internet.

That should take care of it for now. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks a lot for these informations. I will try to do that and wait for the 60 days.

    Have a nice day.

  • For what it’s worth, on our end it looks like the domain transfer is still in progress, so our tools for changing DNS and what not won’t work yet until the domain is fully here.

Squarespace may still be able to cancel the transfer from their end, so if you’re willing to try once more you might go ahead and verify with them.
