Blocking other WordPress authors from your site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
Is it possible to block other WordPress users from seeing your site/posts, as you can on Facebook etc? I am particularly concerned about my work being plagiarised by certain other poets & writers.
    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello there @pauljohnwelsh, You can’t limit your site being seen to a certain set(s) of people like you can your FB posts.

However, your WordPressdotcom site does have Privacy settings for your entire site: If your website is Public, then anyone can view it. You could password protect your posts or pages but then you would need to find a method of sending the password only to those people you wish to see your content and of course vetting those people who want the password. If you change your entire site visibility to Private, you will need to individually invite registered WordPressdotcom users to view your site. Here’s more on Page and Post visibility and site Privacy:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-visibility/

There are measures that can be taken after content has been stolen and posted on another website. But if you are concerned about your work being plagiarized, then the first rule is not to upload your work to the internet.

Here’s some info on content theft and copyright:

This probably isn’t the answer you were hoping for, but let us know if you have any other question about this.

You can set set your website to private so those people you allow will only see your post. I do not think there is any option to block other authors.

Also if you could add CSS or JS to your website there are various scripts available which would prevent anyone to copy your contact by right-clicking or by ctrl+c.

    Hope this helps.

Hello again, Just to expand a bit on what @malkangni mentioned: Only users on the Premium or Business plan can add CSS and only users on the Business plan can add JavaScript to their WordPressdotcom websites. However neither CSS nor JS are truly effective in preventing people from copying your content if they have even a small knowledge of how a web page/browser works. Cheers.

Thank you, both- justjennifer & malkangni. I suspected there wasn’t a way to block other specific WP users 100%, so I may have to make a complaint directly to WP via the link justjennifer sent on plagiarism, but that’s not something I want to do, but will, to nip this in the bud.

My problem – I believe I’v already been plagiarised, but it isn’t an entire poem that’s been plagiarised, but firstly, a few short crucial phrases, but mainly, and more importantly, primarily the plot/narrative/story within the poem, and that part has been stretched/extended to create their ‘new poem’, so it lacks a certain depth, reads rather simplistically, and rather brazenly, they’ve used the exact same title as mine! –

(They published theirs in Jan 2018. I wrote mine in 2013 and published it on WP in March 2015) –

I contacted them directly, and we had some email dialogue back & forth yesterday, but they remain adamant their work is unique, that they never saw my work until yesterday, and considering the number of poets & poems out there, there are bound to be some coincidences. But later today I noticed something I hadn’t noticed yesterday, another oddity; in their first email reply, in their defence, they describe the methodological context in which they wrote this ‘new poem’, but, and I had to read it three or four times to convince myself I wasn’t seeing things, that methodological context is a diluted part of a conversation I had with another poet on WP only last week, in which we were discussing one of my new poems and what’s called the ‘cut-up’ technique of writing, so a very specific conversation, and it’s that rather bizarre (creepy) final discovery, added to the previous two points, that have convinced me, on the weight of probability, it’s very likely there’s more than just coincidence going on here, and I’m doubly concerned because on the back of their WP site they’re selling their new poetry book too. What’s in that!?

Hello again, If the site you are referring to is hosted here on WordPressdotcom, then please read and follow the guidelines in our support guide to report the site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/copyright-infringement-what-to-do/

If the site is hosted someplace else on the web, you’ll need to contact that web hosting provider with a DMCA complaint. Best wishes!

Thanks for the advice and getting back so soon.

As far as I can tell, the site is hosted by WP. I haven’t yet decided whether or not to make a formal complaint to WP about the other ‘author’, I’m weighing it up, need to look at their other work to see if there are other possible infringements.

But, I have a few new concerns! – Firstly, I didn’t get an email notification about this last reply from you, but did with all the others? Secondly, since the email conversation with the other ‘author’ on Monday this week, I’ve had problems with WP, specifically, I can’t ‘Like’ other people’s poems, or anyone else’s work for that matter, on their WP sites, something I’ve never had a problem with before? Perhaps these are just coincidental tech issues with WP generally? Can you offer any help with these?

    Thanks
    Paul Welsh

Small correction, for the issue of Likes I’d open a new forum thread.

Concerning the email issue, if you’ve checked your email spam folder and it still isn’t there, let me know in this current thread.
