Blocking Spam Comments

I’m having trouble with spam comments. I’m getting around 100 a day, and it’s very irritating. I believe I’m getting so many because my blog was recently linked to on some big sites.

Can I add a thing to the comment box where you have to enter the word to prove you’re not spam? I’m not sure what it’s called, but that would be very helpful. The comments do go to my spam box so it’s not harming anything (that I know of), but I would really prefer to not have them in the first place. Thank you.

Wow! Only 100 spams a day is very low. If you had a WordPress.org install you would be shocked to find out how much spam you would have on it. The majority of all so-called information on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to blogs on the .wordpress.com site every day are spam. There is not only robotic spam but there are also people hired to leave phony comments on blogs so they can get their spammy links approved and posted.

What you are asking for is CAPTCHA and it doesn’t work as well as you migh think. Worse still it’s a barrier to visually challenged people like me.
