Blocks
-
As a complete noob to WP I found a ‘getting started’ page that contains a set of links to tutorials for basic topics. The first was about blocks. I think I understand the underlying concept (that being to establish characteristics of displayed content and rules for same), but I got completely lost in trying to use what I thought the lesson taught.
Specifically, I thought that I could add a block to my home page for each separated area of the web site I want to develop and could place text in those blocks . . . maybe 8 or 10 blocks of more or less equal significance – sort of like planning a book by creating a table of contents for each chapter (a block being and chapter ID) and putting notes about content into each block. I couldn’t add a second block, much less the number I wanted to add. So . . . I guess I need to be pointed to a good tute on how to define and use blocks in WP. Please understand that I don’t necessarily want to incorporate these blocks into my web page and probably will not but will use them to plan and execute the overall page design and navigation. I do intend to use them to learn and might incorporate them into a page that I will not publish.
I hope I made myself clear. Please tell me if I’m way off base or somewhere near an understanding of (building) blocks in WP. FWIW I think I saw that predefined block types exist that can be incorporated into WP design; so I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel.
Thanks for any help.

Hi! A block (in WordPress terms) is basically an element you’d add to the page. It can be as simple as: a paragraph of text, an “image block” or “gallery block” – one image, or several images in a gallery; or more complex blocks, like a ‘group’ block which lets you group a set of elements together (useful for various different reasons).
So when you’re creating a page or blog post, you’ll be using blocks as it is; since even paragraphs of text are defined as ‘paragraph blocks‘. It’s possibly easiest to think in terms of the content you’re adding to your page – so for example if you want to insert a single image somewhere on the page, you’d use the image block.
Would you like to share more about what sort of site you’re aiming to set up? That way we can possibly help point you in the right direction. We do have a few other resources that may be helpful, for example this webinar about creating a compelling homepage or our site creation course.
