Blocks freeze
-
Update: The problem seems to happen after I have highlighted text to copy or delete–it deletes the entire block regardless of if it is all highlighted. Then none of the blocks can be edited. I have been able to get around this by saving and then refreshing, but it recurs quickly. So today I logged in to my WordPress account using the Brave browser, which I use for a second Gmail account. So far I have not been able to replicate the problem using Brave and will continue to use that Browser instead of Chrome. If it doesn’t recur, it’s a compatibility issue with Chrome. If it does recur using Brave, perhaps it’s an issue with the cache, which I have not completely cleared on Chrome. Did you try that?
-
Yes, exactly! That’s how it works for me too.
Yeah, I’ve cleared my cache and cookies, turned off all extensions, ad blockers, spyware protection, etc. The problem persists. I’ve also tried it on Edge, and the problem is still there.
WP staff has previously recommended I try a non-chromium browser, which I haven’t done because I don’t want to have a whole new browser on my laptop just to use for WP. WP used to work fine with Chrome, and it needs to again.
I’m assuming Brave is a non-chromium browser, right? I’m glad it worked for you, but I wish WP would still fix the problem with Chrome. -
I discovered Brave fairly recently after having various issue using Chrome. Edge did not help my WordPress problem either. You can download Brave at https://brave.com/ . I recall it had a few annoying features which they make easy to disable, and so far so good. I will keep you and WordPress updated on how Brave works out.

@amberdaultonauthor and @gordonrharris:
We’ve seen reports of various issues with using Chrome 92 or higher that might also be affecting things here.
Could you both try (in Chrome) switching to the wp-admin screens by clicking “Screen Options” on your Posts page as indicated here? https://d.pr/i/pXq8xC
Then try to replicate the issue and let us know if it works properly or if you see the same error. If so, let us know and we’ll surface this with the development team that’s looking into these other strange issues with Chrome lately.
Thanks!

Thanks, Gordon!
I switched to the wp-admin screen in the Posts page in Chrome and tested it. The error is still there.

Thanks, you may be on to something. A few weeks ago I switched back to the classic Wp-Admin view for the left column, because it is much better. I tried your experiment by switching to the new default view. That made no difference in the problem.
I may have narrowed down the cause. In Chrome, I was able to duplicate the problem by highlighting the text in two blocks with my cursor and attempting to delete the text using the delete button on the windows keyboard. That seems to cause the menus above each block to disappear. You can make the block menus come back by hitting refresh on the Windows screen. It will inform you that all of your changes will be lost. Click ok. Now you can edit again. To be certain, I did the same thing again, highlighted and attempted to delete all the text in two blocks, and the problem recurred immediately. Then I tried the same experiment using the Brave browser and was not able to replicate the problem. I hope this helps. Please let us know if you are able to fix the problem. Meanwhile I will avoid using the delete button on my keyboard, and will continue using Brave instead of Chrome.

I just cleared my entire chrome browsing history and cache from all time, but left the cookies. The block editor seems to be working without problems after I did that. I had previously tried clearing the past 24 hrs. but it had no effect. I have not disabled extensions. If the problem returns I will repost.

Clearing the cache and cookies, and deactivating extensions on Chrome don’t work for me. I hope you (the WP staff) is letting your development team know about this. Aside from downloading a new browser, which I don’t need for anything else other than WP, I’m stuck with this problem.
-
Yes, we’re aware of the issue and working on it at https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/54781
-
Clearing the entire cache and cookies did not fix the problem for me after all. The Brave browser continues to work, but I can’t update using Chrome — the problem returns as soon as I copy a block of text, and that makes the block menus disappear. I have to save, preview, then edit the preview or the actual post to return the edit function, but it goes away within a couple of minutes.

Thank you for the additional context. I don’t think it would have anything to do with the Windows update if you’re accessing WordPress.com through a browser, but I’d be curious to see what you find out after disabling all extensions or trying on another browser like Firefox. Do let us know, please!
I’m sorry to hear that you’re still having trouble. As we’re unable to replicate the issue on our end, it’s making it harder for us to troubleshoot it and find the root cause. Have you had the chance to try editing on Firefox to see how it works there? If you haven’t, could you please try that next and let us know what happens?

I downloaded Firefox this morning and was able to reproduce the problem within a minute or two. I recall that a few weeks ago I installed Brave because using Edge did not resolve the problem I am having with Chrome.
I have not been able to replicate the problem using the Brave browser. Because it happens on other browsers, it would not be useful for me to go through all my Chrome extensions one by one. The solution for me is to simply use the Brave browser for my WordPress.com sites. I have several sites each with a different theme, and they all experience the problem.
My problem is easy to replicate in Chrome and in Firefox. Go to a post and begin your edit. Highlight a couple of blocks of text and hit the delete button on your keyboard. Scroll to a another block and try to paste the copied text with control-v. It may or may not work, but that is when the block menus disappear and I can no longer place my cursor or enter text. If I try to highlight and delete just a word or phrase, it will delete everything in the block.
So far I know of only the other person in this thread who has reported this specific problem. Several people are reporting white screens on WordPress but I have not experienced that.

Although it may be a different issue, a problem I have using any browser is that I am unable to paste hyperlinked text, or hyperlink existing text within a block that has been transformed to list. My solution to this problem, which has existed for several weeks, is to create a new block below the list block, and paste or hyperlink text in the new block. Then I simply use the backspace button on my keyboard to move the new text into the bottom of the list block. This is somewhat related, because doing it in any browser other than Brave would probably recreate the other problem we have been discussing.

Hi there,
My problem is easy to replicate in Chrome and in Firefox. Go to a post and begin your edit. Highlight a couple of blocks of text and hit the delete button on your keyboard. Scroll to a another block and try to paste the copied text with control-v
You mentioned you are pasting in text (control-V) but I was not sure where the text was coming from. Do you copy the “couple of blocks of text” before you delete it? Or is the text you are pasting coming form another source?
A related question. Are you pasting complete blocks of text? Or is some of the text from a partially-selected block. i.e. you copy some of the text from a larger paragraph block, but not all the text.
One other thing I am curious about. In Chrome, what happens if you try the same steps, but in an “incognito window” instead of a standard window? Same result or does the editor continue to work while incognito.
Thanks for the additional info!
-
Yes, or just copy a block of text or partial block of text and paste it into another block, with or without deleting the original. Same result as far as I know.

Correct, you will first need to log in. But once you have done that and are able to access your account, do you have the same issue with pasting? Or does it work like it should in Incognito Chrome?
To explain, this is a useful test (even though you need to log on first) because there is no cache or cookies in incognito windows. So if it works when incognito, we would be able to narrow down if it’s cache/cookies or some other issue.
Thanks for the additional info!

Good suggestion! I was unable to reproduce the problem while in incognito mode for 5 minutes. his suggests that the problem is being caused by the cache. Previously when I cleared my cache and entire browsing history, the problem returned after a session. Perhaps the reason that the Brave browser is the only one that does not create the problem is because it strips out 3rd party cookies, ads and ad trackers.
My current theory is that Jetpack is causing the problem. Jetpack is enabled in WordPress.com, and I don’t see any way to prevent it from tracking. Interesting that WordPress.com editing seems to work flawlessly with the Brave browser. Is there a way to prevent Jetpack from tracking and causing this problem?

I tried editing a post in Chrome Incognito mode, too, and the blocks froze (the editing dialogs disappeared) when I tried to select multiple blocks at one time. I tried to click on another block to unfreeze everything, but it didn’t work.
I’ve cleared my cache, cookies, turned off extensions, ad blockers, etc.
