blocks in wordpress (I suddenly can’t edit the block width, help!)

  • Unknown's avatar

I was writing a new entry for my blog and it’s saved as a draft since I am still editing and writing in it, it’s not ready to be published. However I suddenly cannot edit the blocks width!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Place your block inside the Columns block. It acts as a container where you can add blocks in each column. Then, you can resize those blocks by adjusting the height and width of the columns.

First, you will need to click on the ‘Add Block’ (+) button in the top left corner of the screen.

From here, simply locate and add the Columns block to the content editor. Then, you will be asked to choose a variation.

After that, the column layout will be displayed on the screen, and you can now add the block you want by clicking on the ‘Add Block (+)’ button inside a column.

Once the block has been added, you can resize it by using the ‘Column settings’ located in the right panel.

No, but I don’t mean that. I will try showing it with images. First image shows what I used to see when editing a block and circled in red the width option I mean. Second image shows what appears when you click on the circled in red option. Third image shows what it appears now writing in my draft: width edition option previously circled in red is not there anymore.

  • Hi there arquerociego,

Thanks for the screenshot as this is really helpful.

It appears you’re working with the Media and Text block. If you do not see the option to change the width of the block and your theme supports these options, it is possible the block has been added to a Group blockYou can learn more about the Group block here.

You may also want to try editing in a different browser to see if the same issue occurs there. If it still persists, please provide us with the name of the draft post, so we can take a closer look.

I am working with the Media and Text block indeed but it happens with other types of blocks too. On the other side, it hasn’t been added to a group block. The most curious thing is that it only happens to me from my personal laptop. I tried with the computer in my workplace and it works perfectly. I tried with another browser and same failure… try checking the draft post please. It is called “Carta blanca”

    Thank you

  • Hello there,

I checked the Carta blanca page here:
    https://wordpress.com/page/arquerociego.com/737

I’m able to get a width setting for the Media and Text Blocks. As mentioned previously, you can put other types of content in a Columns Block to control the width.
    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/columns-block/

Since you were able to edit from another computer, the issue could be specific to yours. Please check that your computer and browsers are updated.

You can also try logging in and out of WordPress.com or restarting your computer and internet. Here is a list of other checks:

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions and have a great day!

I guess you mean changing the Media and text block for a Columns block. Would it look the same that way? I also had the idea of editing the width using the code language view/editor. But it looks so difficult and tedious.

I already tried the rest of things you say. Thank you anyways. I have thought about recording my screen and uploading a yt video temporarily to show it to you. I will try…

Here I am sending a video of the problem. It only happens in my laptop as I said. In the video first I show you how with other published entries the width option of the Media and Text bock appears. In second place I show you the drafts are and I enter to edit the one I am currently working Carta Blanca. There I show you how the text appearance changes as soon as I enter and how the width option doesn’t appear. However, in third place when I show how it would look like already published the width settings seems to be fine (like I had done it before this failure happened). In the code editor the code of the width setting appears…where it isn’t offered is in the visual editor. Weird

  • I noticed on your video that your browser is zoomed out, and there’s a chance that this is causing the issue. Can you please reset the zoom to the actual size and see if it works or not?

    I tried and no result

  • Hi there,

Firstly, thanks for sharing your videos. It helps to see the issue as you see it. On our end, I tried viewing this (and also working on a separate test site) to replicate this issue, and for me I still see the correct width and alignment settings, as expected. Here’s a screenshot of what I see when I edit the draft post at https://wordpress.com/post/arquerociego.com/331:

I noted that my colleagues above also mentioned that they see the expected alignment setting, which has me thinking there may be an issue that is specific to our browser or computer.

Usually when an issue like this occurs, it can be traced to an expired (or broken) login auth cookie stored on your local web browser. It looks like you are using Google Chrome as your browser, so with this in mind I would like you to try the following

    • clear your cache and cookies based on the steps google recommends here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050
    • Also make sure you are not blocking any “3rd party cookies” as explained in that guide as well.
    • If you continue to have loading issues after completing those steps, I would like you to try another browser instead, like Firefox. Are you able to proceed if you use a browser other than Chrome?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Hello, thanks for all the info. I tried everything a few days ago and no results. So I gave up and started using the code editor even if it would be more tedious.

Suddenly yesterday night I logged in and the interface of the editor looked kinda different. I guess there was an update. And surprise! the visual editor allows me to use the change width option again! It’s solved. I guess the editor was being updated or sth. Dunno, weird…but it solved by itself.

Thanks again for all ur support. I close the topic :)
