  • Howdy –

On WordPress.com you can create a blog or a website, entirely for free. You could even have both if you want.

The difference is how they are structured. This guide explains more about those details: https://en.support.wordpress.com/create-a-blog/

Do you have any specific questions I can answer?

What do you know about the upgrade/web-hosting offered on this site? I want to upgrade soon as this will be a business. Do I need to go anywhere else to get on the web? Learning all this “stuff” if very frustrating. You seem very nice! I did buy some books to help me understand all this. Believe me – if I could afford the prices these web people charge to put it up for me- I’d pay them !

    Thanks

  • Since you are just starting out I’d recommend that you stick with WordPress.com as we take care of the nitty gritty details that you’d be responsible for if you were using the installation of WordPress and a hosting company. Details like site upgrades, fixing the site if it goes down, SEO…

If you want a custom domain for your business that only costs $35.88 year with WordPress.com personal and this should be sufficient to help you get started.

A bit more information about the differences between WordPress.com (here) and the self hosted version of WordPress can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

We have some great resources to help you get started. Take a look at our learning guide learn.wordpress.com and blogging courses at https://en.support.wordpress.com/blogging-u/

Let me know if you have any other questions with getting started.

Thanks I think your right about staying with WordPress. I am going to upgrade to the Personal Plan for now then upgrade as I get “smarter”.
That is what your talking about right? Do I change my site address first to include something else – before I sign up ( my domain name)? does the paid support do that for me? Should I delete the whole thing first? I’m confused- as usual. I want people to look for this business near a local well-known town. Should that have been included in my domain name when I registered it?(eg. my businessnearhappytown.com )

Also if I activate more than one theme to see how it looks with info- is there a way to “transfer” that on both to see which I like better?

You respond very quickly- that’s so much appreciated! Will you be my primary support since our correspondence seems to be exclusive (if you know what I mean). I await for your response before deleting my site and starting again!

ps I figured out how to change my public username- yeah!

Thanks and expect a barrage of questions to come!

  • Hi again –

With your Personal Plan upgrade you will be able to reach live chat support via wordpress.com/help/contact/ We staff live chat 24 hours / day M-F and 8-5 eastern on Saturday and Sunday. If live chat is not available you’ll request will be submitted as an email to our Happiness Engineers.

You can add the Personal Plan from My Sites > Plans or from wordpress.com/pricing/

Once you add that you’ll be prompted to set up your custom domain. That’s the one that ends in .com, .blog, .org, etc… Note, that you are still going to have the free .wordpress.com site address as that is what connects your custom domain to your account. Don’t worry, only you (and staff) will see that .wordpress.com address. All of your site visitors are going to see your new custom domain.
