Blog

I’m planning to create a blog/newsletter using the Canard theme. I’d like readers to be able to ask to receive notifications when a new post has been added, and eventually, make the blog/newsletter accessible only via a subscription after receiving three free articles. Is that possible on WordPress and this particular theme?

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi there,

Your theme doesn’t matter in this case – it just controls how the site looks, not how it works. So you can do this using any theme.

All WordPress.com sites come with an email subscription feature already built in. Anyone can follow your site via the follow button that appears bottom-right on the site. People with a WordPress.com account will be subscribed via the WordPress.com Reader, with the option to enable email notifications if they choose. People without a WordPress.com account will be offered the choice to open an account, or just subscribe via email.

You can also let people subscribe via email using the Follow Blog widget, or by adding a blog subscription block to the content of your posts and pages.

But there’s no way to restrict this – if someone subscribes to your site in this way, they’ll get notified of each new post you publish on your site.

If you want to restrict content to paid subscribers, you can use our Premium Content block available on any of our paid plans. When you write a post, content you add normally would be visible to everyone, while content inside the Premium Content block is only available to subscribers. So rather than giving x amount of free articles, you’ll have teaser content that’s visible to everyone, with a prompt to subscribe to see the full content.

This will be the simplest to set up, as you can use WordPress.com’s existing email subscriptions feature, and it will be cheapest as well, as you can do it on the Personal Plan. You’ll need to be in a country that the payment processor Stripe supports to be able to accept payments.

To set it up the way you describe in your post, would need our Business Plan. You will also need a Memberships plugin to control who can access what, and a Subscriptions plugin to handle recurring payments for subscribers. Most good membership and subscription plugins are premium, so you’ll have to pay for those on top of the Business Plan’s cost.

If you want to go this route, we recommend the WooCommerce Memberships and WooCommerce Subscriptions plugins. You can use others as well if you prefer, but in that case we won’t be able to provide you with support for the plugins themselves – WooCommerce is made by the same company that owns WordPress.com, so we are able to provide support for the WooCommerce plugins on our Business Plan.

Let me know if you have questions about any of these options.
