Hi, I’m trying to set up a blog. Do I need to pay in order to have a blog? I thought it was free? Every time I go through the steps, it’s either pay for a domain or map to my domain but still have to pay a minimum of $3/mth. I thought setting up a blog was free?

    Hello @dcdigitalmediasolutions,

Of course you can avail a free WordPress.com site. WordPress.com provides a free WordPress.com subdomain, now to give you an example sample.wordpress.com will be the subdomain offered to you when you create a site with WordPress.com.

If you are keen on getting rid of the .wordpress.com part and use a custom domain name instead, for example: sample.com. In this case, adding a custom domain to your site requires a WordPress.com plan.

It is likely that you were directed to register/map a domain because you were persistent on creating a custom domain like I explained in the above paragraph.

I hope this clears the confusion.

    Hi dcdigitalmediasolutions,

Do I need to pay in order to have a blog? I thought it was free?

If you want to set up a free blog, there are a couple of options for the address:

    1. A free WordPress.com subdomain (where the address ends in “.wordpress.com”)
    2. A free .blog subdomain

Custom domains are a feature of paid plans, so you will be asked to upgrade if you are choosing a domain with one of these extensions or to map an existing domain to WordPress.com.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
