  The address that I want for my blog is already in use. I was told the only option was to register a domain upgrade. Can someone explain what this would mean to me?

  You could also just register another free blog URL that is somewhat less to your liking.

  But, generally speaking, I’m a huge advocate of a custom domain name, and getting it as soon as you possibly can, provided you can afford the $18 or so dollars a year for the domain and mapping. Regardless of what happens to WordPress.com in the future, you will always have that domain name, and if you change hosts, you can just take the name with you, so your readers will follow you. They may not even notice you moved. Also, it’s very powerful for a professional appearance. Most people will assume your URL is whatever.com, not whatever.wordpress.com.
