    Hi Joan,

So on WordPress.com, sites with Custom Domains have two parts: their domain, and their *.wordpress.com site. The *.wordpress.com site is what you design and create on, and then for your readers we just display the custom domain instead.

When you create a site with a custom domains name, we still need to create the *.wordpress.com address to make the site work correctly. So when you enter in “horburyandossettfamilyhistory.net” — we change “.” to dot for your site name to meet the technical requirements.

You’re site is still being mapped to horburyandossettfamilyhistory.net.

You do have a small issue though: you currently have two WordPress.com sites and you’ve mapped horburyandossettfamilyhistory.net to both of them. I imagine you’d only need one.

Which of these WordPress.com sites are you editing and using?

These are the WordPress.com sites you have with the custom domain mapped:

    • horburyandossettfamilyhistorydotnet.wordpress.com
    • horburyandossettfamilyhistorydotnet1.wordpress.com

You also have horburyandossettfamilyhistory.wordpress.com — are you actually using that one?

Let me know and I’ll move your upgrades to just the blog you’re using.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

Dear Alec, I am so relieved to get your prompt message (I am 78 and seem to have got myself into a bit of a muddle.) If I explain – I already have material on a website which, unfortunately, is owned by my grandson. It has been very frustrating and I decided to buy my own site. I am a novice at this and managed to buy the site at Fasthosts. However I have been using Word Press and got used to it so I wanted to use it on the new site. I managed (with Word Press help) to get it 'mapped??' in the meantime I did start a word press 'practise site' to find out if I could copy and paste stuff from my current site onto a new one (and I can). I don't want to use a site with Word Press as part of the name – just “horburyandossettfamilyhistory.net” (my current site is called horburyandossettfamilyhistory.co.uk so I don't want it to change much. You say you can do this for me. I will start the new site and stop using the 'practise word press site' 'horburyandossettfamilyhistory.wordpress.com'. so if you can set up the first one on your list of two for me please with the upgrades etc. I can get started. I will be very grateful.
    Thanks again,
    Joan

    Hi Joan,

I’ve put both your Premium plan and Domain Mapping upgrades onto one site, as requested:

    https://horburyandossettfamilyhistorydotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades

I also removed and refunded the unnecessary second domain mapping. You’ll see that refund of £9 in your bank account in about a week.

Let me know if you need further help setting up your site at the URL above. :)

    Best,

    -Alex G.

Dear Alec, I am using Twenty Twelve theme (which I used previously) but I now have ‘Like’ and Comments boxes at the bottom of the pages. How can I get rid of these as I prefer not to have them
    Regards
    Joan

    Hi Joan,

You can remove the Like and Comments options from any Page by editing the page and unchecking the boxes described here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

    Add a Like Button

    Best,

    -Alex G.

    Hi Alex,
Many thanks for this help. I have got rid of the ‘Likes’ icon, but not the ‘Comments’ block. I have disabled all the bits that you mentioned. However my site is not live yet so I don’t know how it will function.
    Thanks again
    Joan

    Hi Joan

I also see the Comments active on your home page here:

    https://horburyandossettfamilyhistorydotnet.wordpress.com/

However, it does not appear that it was disabled. I visited your page editor and found the Comments box still checked:

You’ll need to uncheck that box, then click Update in the page editor here:

    https://horburyandossettfamilyhistorydotnet.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=138&action=edit

However my site is not live yet so I don’t know how it will function.

Changing your privacy settings only adjust who can read your site. Everything else works and looks the same while your working on it and when its live.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

Alex – HELP I have finished setting up my site and I clicked to make it go live, However when I google it I am getting a peculiar message that it is being held???
    Joan

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi Alex, This is what it says This “website holding” page is displayed when you visit horburyandossettfamilyhistory.net because the owner has registered the domain name (or set up a sub-domain), but has not yet created a website.

Without this page, website visitors would see a “Page not found” error. The holding page confirms that the domain's DNS has been set up correctly.

    Hi Joan,

You’re getting this issue because your domain’s name servers are not pointing to WordPress.com. Follow Grace’s instructions she provided in your new forum thread:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/accessing-site-2

Once you have those name servers setup, all you have to do to make your site live is go here:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/general/horburyandossettfamilyhistorydotnet.wordpress.com

Change your “Site Visibility” setting to “Allow search engines to index this site”.

The message at Google will go away once they have a chance to re-index your site’s content.

    Best,

    -Alex G.

Alex, I have tried this and it says that horburyandossettfamilyhistory.net is already mapped to Word Press. Is it possible for you to sort it out for me please?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Joan,

Since you purchased horburyandossettfamilyhistory.net through a different domain registrar, there are two parts to making it your custom domain on WordPress. One, you need the domain mapping upgrade on WordPres. You’ve already got that setup perfectly.

Next, you need the domain’s name servers pointing to WordPress. I can see here:

    http://who.is/whois/horburyandossettfamilyhistory.net

Your name servers currently point to these records:

    ns1.livedns.co.uk
    ns2.livedns.co.uk
    ns3.livedns.co.uk

You need to change them to these:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

This step you must take at your domain registrar, Tucows (or one of their resellers) — wherever you purchased the domain.

We have a sample email here you can send them if you’re not sure how to do this on your own:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    (Under Step #3)

    Best,

    -Alex G.
