Blog appearance

I’m not even sure if it is possible to do what I’m going to ask and if this is possible I’m not sure how to go about it.

I know I can keep the most recent articles in their entirety on the main page of my blog? What I would like to know is can I list just the titles of older articles together with the category listings on the main page of my blog. Could I then file the entire article somewhere else so the main page looks a bit neater? Or can I somehow configure the blog’s main page to show only titles until someone clicks on the title to review that older article? First, can this even be done? Second, would I need to change the entire layout of the blog? Third, what other layout styles would allow me to do this? Fourth, or would I have to have separate blogs for each subject (politics, home, weather, etc) and then just cross-reference?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here’s the easiest way to achieve what I think you want:

    1. Change the number of posts which display on the main page. From your dashboard: settings > reading. You could set this as low as one, if you choose.

    2. Put the Recent Posts widget in your side bar. This will give readers the titles of older posts with links to the whole post.

    3. If you want people to be able to access posts for just one subject, use categories. You need to assign categories to posts as you write them, then put the categories widget in the sidebar. People will be able to click on the category and be taken to a list of all posts in that category.

    4. You do not need to change your layout to achieve any of this.

    rosclarke,

Hey thank you so much. Yes, I think this is exactly what I want. Have a nice day and thanks again!!!!!

Also, you seem to have quite a lot of longer posts. Another suggestion which would make your blog more manageable, would be to use the More tag, so that only the first paragraph or so showed on the main blog page, with a link to the rest of the content.

    rosclarke,

Ok, I saved just 5 posts to the main page and others are listed in the sidebar. BUT, in doing that something happened to my sidebar. I’m sure I did something wrong here but don’t understand what step I neglected. I lost all the links to other web sites (contact Congress, contact WH, etc). How do I get all those links back and also keep the links to articles spoken of above??

BTW, the suggestion of the “more tag” is great!! Thanks!!

It’s possible that you hadn’t changed your widgets before. Blogs come with a pre-loaded set of widgets, but the first time you make a change, these are all removed. You should be able to go to your widgets page and add them back in, without losing any of your links.
