Blog Archives

I’d like to create a separate archives page instead of using the sidebar widget. How can I do this? Of course I know how to create the separate page, but how can I show the archive list on it? Any tips?

When you create the page, look to the right for the box that says Page Slug. It’s a drop-down box. Choose Archive, name the page, and publish it. I like to do Save and Continue Editing, then preview the page/post before clicking on publish.

I don’t see any drop-down either, just a blank box. I tried typing “archive” in it, but didn’t work.

Oh, jinkies, I’m sorry. Page Template! I wrote that from memory. Fading, obviously.
Mea culpa.

Ah, but all themes don’t have page templates. See this thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3307&page&replies=10

My goodness, I knew they don’t all have contact pages, but an archive seems so very basic. Good link, thanks!

As it turns out, I’d never seen a Page Template. I’ve never used one of the themes that has one. I switched my test blog over to Misty Look just to see what it was. You’re right: all of the themes should have them and certainly the new ones should (like The Journalist).

And so, working off that list, since the blogger is using Contempt, absolutely nothing I said applies in this case. It might help someone in the future but I am obviously a day late and a dollar short right now.

Actually, there is a workaround in that thread I linked above. A little too tedious for me but somebody else might find it useful.

I tried the work around you linked to, but unfortunately I can’t get it to work. After switching to the Misty Look and generating an archive page, I go to visual editor… but there’s nothing to copy–it’s completely blank. Loading from the template and not the page I created I imagine. So it seems the work-around no longer works.
It’s too bad, I would really like an archive page (as well as contacts, links) but I like the Contempt theme.

Ahhh … but there is a way around this that I use all the time. After generating the Archives (or Links) page templates in the Misty Look Theme you can copy from the front of the Page all the info and then paste it into a second Page in the visual mode. Do not select “archives” under Page template, instead select “default” and publish the second Page (eg. Site Archives). Voila! You can now delete the first Archives page you created with the the template. And, when you change your blog theme to Contempt all that info will be there.
