Blog article layout

Have created a blog within the Appleton theme.

I am wondering if there is a way of resizing the Featured Image at the top of each individual article post page?

At the moment it spans the entire width of the top of the page but I want it to be smaller.

I have tried minimizing both the size of the of the thumbnail images and the large size dimensions under dashboard>settings>media >media settings but this did not do anything.

I also want the image to go above the article title. I am aiming for a blog page to be like the following:https://www.behance.net/gallery/19242111/Blog-Article-Layout/modules/130073283. So it goes small square image and then blog title.

I have a free website at the moment with no access to editing the css.

Any help would be most appreciated:)

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Howdy –

Thanks for getting in touch. Looking at the Blog page I do see that the posts display a smaller image above the title and text snippet. This is how you want that page to look correct? https://back2balance51.wordpress.com/grid-of-posts-3×2/

But then, when you click on one of those posts and open it up as its own page, you see the title at the top, and a giant full width image, and then the post. I agree that we should figure something different out.

How does this look to you on the mobile view of your site? That’s something I always suggest folks to check out when considering changes. The majority of your readers are going to view this on a mobile device or tablet rather than a computer.

My suggestion is to use the blog filter on https://wordpress.com/themes/ and scroll through your options there, click through the preview and find a free option that suits your project needs.

We can talk about upgrades later, but I don’t find it to be a smart decision to upgrade now when there are free options that will suit your needs.

    Hello!

Thanks for your reply:) Yeah it does seem to be the trick of finding the right template with the right layouts to start with. However if I was to keep the appleton theme does anyone know what the css would be to place the title below the image and make the image more smaller (width and height)?

    Any help most appreciated.

  • Hi there,

It is possible to edit the various page templates of your site (such as the one used to define the layout of single blog posts) so that is one way that you can approach this.

It’s not possible to change the width of the featured image in your blog posts (the block lacks those kind of width settings at the template level) but what you could do is remove the featured image placeholder from the template.

When you do this, no image will show, and then you can instead add the image manually at the start of your blog post, which will make it appear below your site title (and at a smaller width) as you prefer.

You can find the template to edit by visiting this page then following along with the video I’ve linked below: https://back2balance51.wordpress.com/wp-admin/site-editor.php

Once you are there the video at this link will show you how it’s done.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
