Blog came with widgets showing but dashboard shows no widgets

  I have just set up a blog using the FLOWER POWER THEME, which shows 6 widgets in the sidebar. But when I go into dashboard (appearance/widgets) the sidebar is empty. I want to remove some of the widgets, which I understand is done by dragging the unwanted widgets to the ‘inactive widgets’ section. But how do you do this when there are no widgets in the sidebar in the first place. I am clearly missing something which should be blindingly obvious, but I have been looking at this on and off for several hours without success.

  Themes show a default set of widgets. Once you add a widget the default set disappears and you can add whichever ones suit you:
