Blog comments

We have many comments on our blog each day. The issue is when you refresh the page to view new comments, the page ultimately stops at what appears to be a random spot in the comments section. We would like it to stop at the last comment. Help

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

When I scrolled down to the bottom of the comments on the post 2018 Season – Game 14 – Dolphins @ Vikings and refreshed the page, it stayed in the same place. When I posted a comment the page automatically scrolled down a bit to reveal that new comment, even though it was held for moderation.

Are you saying that if one or two comments is added to a page or post, then the when the page or post is refreshed your location within it will jump to a random spot in the comments rather than automatically scroll down slightly to reveal the new comment or comments?

Yes, it has always been this way. People bring it up all the time in the comments, most recently over the weekend, either yesterday or Saturday, I think it was on a different page of the comments because I do remember reading that once there was a page turn, it had stopped temporarily.

Is it the number of comments we have before a page turn? Is it the number of comments we have in total? Neither of these things?

I have noticed that sometimes posting a comment helps. If you are just reading what others are saying, lurking, refreshing the page and following the conversation, it will stop at some random spot. Each refresh will generally take you back to that same point in the comments, no rhyme or reason that I can see.

    Hi,

Sorry about the delay in response. Christmas shopping!

I just posted a response to my first test comment on the post mentioned in my first post. The result was that the page automatically reloaded/refreshed and eventually land exactly at my new comment. Then, when I reloaded the page again it landed at the same spot. So in my tests I’m not producing the results that you’ve described, and in those tests I find that the behavior of the page is precisely as I would expect it to be.

However, I’ll tag the topic for staff attention, as they might have some explanation and/or suggestions. Staff will respond here.

    Happy Holidays,

My second test comment tonight did result unexpectedly. The page evidently reloaded and it came to rest close to where my three comments lie but somewhat above them. So the landing was a little off. I don’t know the reason for this error, but I suspect that the large number of comments on the post (969) might be a factor.

  • Hi there,

It’s not possible to force the page to go to the last comment on a reload.

If you are viewing a particular spot on a page, refreshing should usually take you back to more or less the same spot, relevant to the overall site. So if you were 70% down the page, after refreshing you should still be at around 70%. This is something that’s controlled by your browser, not by us.

In this case, if new comments are getting added very quickly, 70% down the page might not be at the same comment after the reload that it was on before, but there’s no way for your browser to know that, as it doesn’t know you’re looking at a specific comment. It only knows you’re around 70% from the top of the page.

After leaving a comment the refresh will land you on exactly your comment, as at that point you’ll be loading the permalink for the comment rather than the page, i.e. siteaddress/date/post/#comment-12345 rather than siteaddress/date/post

    Thanks @kokkieh, and happy holidays!

My second test comment tonight did [produced an unexpected result]. The page evidently reloaded and it came to rest close to where my three comments lie but somewhat above them.

I made an error here. Actually my second test comment produced an automatic refresh and landed exactly at the new comment, as had my first test comment, and as @kokkieh says will happen above.

The difference in my second test occurred after the manual reloading. Unlike my first test where it landed right back at the comment after reloading, in this case it was a little off, a result which not unusual according to @kokkieh’s explanation above.
