blog domain names

Recently my friend tried to register for a blog. but most of the blog domain names we tried were already taken and the irritating part was they are not even being used. Why does WordPress allow this. serious bloggers cant find good blog domain names because of this.

I think WordPress should close accounts not used for more than 6 months. Also users should be allowed to delete their blog domain names if they do not wish to use it. that would help other interested bloggers in getting good names.

    Please do consider this seriously.

Seriously suppose I give you a couch and you place it in your basement and choose to leave it there unused. Are you suggesting that you ought to retain the right to waltz in to and take the couch and give it to someone else.?

I would take your “plight” seriously if you reached into your wallet and for the same price a a fancy coffee from Starbucks ($5.00) and purchased yourself your own domain.

It’s my opinion that we are quickly moving towards a time when owning your own domain will be the status quo. If a specific domain name is that important to you and your friend then act to secure and make them and make them your own.

You can purchase your own domain for $5.00 per year and if you wish you purchase domain mapping ($15.00 per year for the two together). Then it makes no difference what name of the wordpress.com root url is at all. For example http://xyzabc.wordpress.com can be domain mapped to http://mywonderfulblog.com and that would solve your issue forevermore. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

While its very easy to say why don’t you get your own domain name, you must understand that some people out there don’t have a computer let alone a credit card or the money to buy a domain name. that’s why all come rushing to free services given by wordpress or blogspot. while the service is simply excellent (truthfully), I still feel its such a waste of good blog names. when people just book them and don’t bother to use them and they are lying there for 3 years or more.

also id probably give the couch to the Salvation Army :) and i cant afford Starbucks, I make coffee at home :)

    God Bless!

Valid point, use it or lose it.

Though to be honest the name of your blog is not that important, its what you put in it that matters, its the content, well written blogs and good images.

@shop, @tt: maybe “get it or forget it” is the better slogan for domain names.
