blog followers after transfer

In 2016 I stopped using my wp.COM blog for my wp.ORG blog that is part of my self-hosted website. I purchased the Jetpack plugin so that I could export my old blog data which was supposed to include my followers to the new blog. Since doing this, I’ve not noticed anyone coming to my new blog page at the .ORG and in fact any new followers are still clicking the follow icon at the old free wp.COM blog. Since I know only those followers who signed up for email notifications on the old site are the ones carrying over, I’ve looked all over for ways to be sure people are seeing the new blog page at my website. I’m not sure what else to do and it’s very confusing. I have an email list of almost 200 people, so those that may actually be getting my blogs through WP…I don’t want to double message them via my Mailchimp list. I do want to be certain everyone gets my new content. I’m at a loss as to how to ensure old followers can still get my new posts at the .ORG and new followers finding my .COM site will be pulled into the new blog via the Jetpack plugin.

Do I need to constantly do a new import via the plugin to pull in any subscribers that didn’t read my old post about moving to my new blog?

I’m seriously considering closing down the blog portion at my WP.org website and going back to using the old free blog just because it looks like the plugin isn’t really doing its job and I’m not gaining any followers. That would mean I’d have to do double duty on my posting and I don’t want that. Please advise. Thank you.

How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Then we subscribe to this thread so we are notified when they respond. • @sparklebymonica it looks like you left the old site live :)

You can transfer all of the new followers over:
    http://jetpack.me/support/subscription-migration-tool/

From there you can either continue moving new followers over periodically, or consider redirecting your traffic to your new site: https://wordpress.com/domains/add/site-redirect/ . You can also just make the old site private if you’d like, but since it still gets traffic, personally I’d recommend sending that along to the new address.

@supernovia, I did not want to pay the $15 monthly fee for redirection…so I already performed the jetpack migration plugin option. Based on what you are saying though…I will indeed have to periodically keep going to .COM in order to do another migration to sweep newer followers to the other site at .ORG. You are correct, I do not wish to close the old site down due to traffic, however, the plugin made it seem like this was all an instant process that I would not have to continue to do. Hmm..not very convenient after all. Thanks for your response.

Thanks, @timethief. I see a staff member has responded, so I will remember your tip for any future issues.

@sparklebymonica – I think there might be a small misunderstanding. The fee for a site redirect upgrade is a yearly fee, not monthly. https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ Please read the important notes there about permalinks. To the best of my knowledge the site redirect is a 301 redirect, meaning search engines are informed that this is a permanent change.

As far as Mailchimp, if people are signing up for updates on your WordPressdotcom site, you could add the Mailchimp subscription widget so they are getting the right newsletter: https://en.support.wordpress.com/mailchimp/

    Good thinking, @justjennifer :)

And @sparklebymonica typically people don’t leave their retired sites up like that. They either redirect them or make them private. I think a widget is a good solution, or, just periodically migrate your followers over.

Or, like @justjennifer mentioned, that redirect fee is only once per year. It also adds a 301 code to the site which signals search engines to update their links, so hopefully by the end of the year, most folks will be reaching the new site. Also, assuming you did copy your content to the new address, that may be a better option anyway if you want to avoid “duplicate content” penalizations.
