Blog has dissappeared – potential domain expiry?

  I help run a student society at a university. We used this wordpress account to manage the content of our website, but today the domain won’t load (it would when last checked a few weeks ago) and wordpress says we do not have any sites to manage on this account. As it is the website of a university society it gets handed over every year and we are struggling to get in contact with the person who originally set up the website. We are happy to let go of the domain (although currently our email accounts go via this domain too) but would like to get the content that was present on the website back. Is there any way to do this? We’re just a student society with basically no technical knowledge, and we’re unsure even if the website was self hosted or hosted by wordpress. Any info (no matter how obvious) appreciated.
