Blog Header Issue

  • Unknown's avatar

My website is set up to be a functioning website with several pages, and one these pages will be my blog. When I go to my blog page to edit, it shows it has all the same header information as the front welcome page. I don’t want my blog to have this information on it and I can’t even title the page ‘Blog’ because it won’t show up due to having the same unchangeable header information as the front page.

Heres the link to my blog page: https://tcmichael.wordpress.com/blog

How do I fix this? I’ve tried multiple things and none have worked.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    Front page (Welcome) — https://tcmichael.wordpress.com/
    Blog page — https://tcmichael.wordpress.com/blog/

When I go to my blog page to edit, it shows it has all the same header information as the front welcome page. I don’t want my blog to have this information on it and I can’t even title the page ‘Blog’ because it won’t show up due to having the same unchangeable header information as the front page.

The blog page title isn’t hidden because it has the same “unchangeable header information” as the front page. It’s hidden because it is no longer a static page after it has been assigned as the page on which to display your posts. It is now a dynamic page that has replaced the default blog page, and therefore taken on the characteristics of the default blog page, including having no title.

Dynamic pages will typically display the site header, even if a featured image has been assigned to a static page that has been assigned as, and is now functioning as, the dynamic posts page.

How do I fix this? I’ve tried multiple things and none have worked.

I don’t find a perfect solution. If you hide the site header image, then it won’t appear on the “Blog” page, but it also won’t appear on the front page either. You may add a featured image to the static front page, but this will not have the site title and tagline and menus overlaying it, as is the case with a site header image. The Independent Published theme guide says:

You can personalize your site with a Custom Header, which is used as the background for your site title and tagline on all posts and pages.

    and

The Featured Images from your pages and posts can optionally replace your Custom Header. To enable this, go to Customize → Theme Options and check box for Use Post Cover Images. The recommended size for these images is 1400 by 600 pixels.

In my tests, the removal of the custom site header results in the loss of the overlaying site title, tagline, and custom menus. Featured images may be used to replace the custom header on single posts and on static pages, except the static page assigned as the posts page.

I forgot to add a link to the Independent Publisher theme guide, and spelled it incorrectly as “Independent Published.”

Thanks for replying to my question. I have a featured image on 3 pages (works, dark rising trilogy, secret project), but when I give my blog page a featured image nothing happens. It stays as the current header image which is on the welcome page, about page, and contact page. I can change the header image to the whole website, but the issue will remain the same. I wouldn’t have a problem hiding the site header image, but I need the title, tag line, and menu on the front page.

I was hoping I could just add a featured image specifically unique to the blog page, but unfortunately it seems like that may not be the case. I will do a test blog post to see if the “use post images” will work.

Any other ideas that might fix this issue?

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

I just did a test post on my blog and checked the box to use post covered images as a header image for the single post. Once I saved the post I checked how it looked on my laptop, tablet, and android phone. In all 3 formats, none of them had the featured image in the header area, but just below the post title. The header image remained the same as in the welcome page. You can view the test post here: https://tcmichael.wordpress.com/blog

I might just be stuck with it looking like this.

I may not have been clear. Your results are the same as mine. The “use post cover images” setting only applies to single posts and static pages. It will not work on a dynamic page, including a static page functioning as the blog page.

You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention. Staff might have some suggestions which I haven’t thought of, but I don’t believe there is a fix for the issue, unless CSS customization might be applicable.

Okay, I added the tag just in case someone has another perspective, but if not I’m sure I can deal with the blog page as it is. If I decide not to like the look in the future then I will try out another theme. Thanks a bunch for your help, I appreciate it.

In your test, the featured image applied to the lone post does appear in the header area, replacing the custom header, on the single post as the theme guide says it will. See “First blog post” (https://tcmichael.wordpress.com/2016/05/17/first-blog-post/).

You wouldn’t expect the featured image of a post to appear in the header area of the blog page, but you might expect the featured image of the static page assigned as the blog page to appear instead of the custom header image. It doesn’t do so on this theme. There might be other themes on which a featured image will replace the custom header on the blog page, as suggested by staff member supernovia in the recent topic Featured image does not publish, in a post where she says:

Big Brother does not support featured images on the blog page. https://bigbrotherdemo.wordpress.com/news/

In fact several themes do not. Do you want help trying to find one that does though?

I did notice that after reviewing the changes I had made. When I made my last comment, I didn’t realize I could click on the title of that blog post to bring up its own sole static page. Sorry for my ignorance on that.

Do you know of any other free themes that allow custom headers on all pages, including the blog page?

I think you mean one that allows a featured image on all pages, including the blog page. What WordPress.com calls a featured image is not the same as a custom header, though the former may replace the latter in some cases.

The answer is no, I’m not aware of any. That’s why I referred you to staff, and specifically to the post by supernovia where she offered to help the member who started the post Featured image does not publish find a theme which does allow a featured image to display on the blog page, saying, as I’ve quoted above:

Big Brother does not support featured images on the blog page….In fact several themes do not. Do you want help trying to find one that does though?

I understand. For now I will keep it as is after experimenting a little bit. Thank you for your help!

    You’re welcome!
The tag “mod-look” won’t work. I’ve added the tag “modlook.”

  • Hi there,

The information @musicdoc1 provided is accurate in this case. We have a number of themes that use the featured image on posts and pages as a custom header. You can find all of them here:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/featured-image-header/

However, none of them show a featured image header on archive pages. Archive pages will always show the site’s custom header. Archive pages include your blog/posts page, as well as category, tag and author pages along with search result pages.

The Blog page won’t show a title, but it is possible to insert one using a bit of CSS trickery. You’ll need the Premium Plan to do that, though. It might also be possible to replace the image using CSS, but I’ve never tried that, and even if it’s possible, the image most likely won’t be responsive on smaller screens like smart phones. The best place to make sure if that’s possible would be our CSS forum, here:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forums/css-customization

That’s why I referred you to staff, and specifically to the post by supernovia…

Big Brother does not support featured images on the blog page….In fact several themes do not. Do you want help trying to find one that does though?

Just to clarify, what @supernovia referred to there are themes which show featured images on individual posts on the blog page. The blog page itself does not display a featured image as the header.

Thank you Kokkieh for the information. If none of the themes allow a featured image as the header on the “blogs” page, then I think I’ll leave it as it is for now. I was able to figure out that featured images can be used on blog post pages, just no the overall blog page itself. I would be interested in looking into the CSS more in the future, but right now I have no experience there.

Thank you for the information and the insight!
