Blog hijacked modlook

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been following a blog in my reader called “Ohdearbaker” and since the blogger has been inactive for quite a while now (a few years at least) I haven’t been seeing any posts in my feed. However, within the past 6 months posts have been flooding my WordPress reader from a blog called “StudoPress” under the heading of Ohdearbaker. This seems like the blog I was following was hijacked and I’m wondering if there has been some sort of privacy breach. Either way this blog does not belong in my feed and I fear that this may be happening to others as well. Since it would matter a great deal to me if people who are following my WordPress blog had another blogger’s posts showing up in their feed instead of my own I find this issue troubling. Please look into this and advise.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

Please share the full site address of the blog in question.

You can unfollow the blog via your Reader to stop the notifications as well. Let me know if you need help with that.

The blog I am following and do not want to unsubscribe from is Ohdearbaker.wordpress.com. The blog that has posts in my feed under this blog’s heading is StudioPress.blog (affiliated with StudioPress.com). I can send you a screen shot of what my reader in WordPress looks like and you can see for yourself that posts from this non WordPress blog have been showing up in my feed as posts from “Ohdearbaker”.

Is someone looking in to this matter or does blog hijacking mean nothing to the support staff here at WordPress??? I would like a response please. Otherwise forward me to someone who can help. Thanks.

Hello there, it would definitely be helpful to take a screenshot of what you are seeing in the Reader and then upload it to your site’s Media Library so that Staff can have a look at it when they return to this thread.

    Take a Screenshot

I’ve added the screenshot to my blog’s (theartfulgardener.wordpress.com) media library. Does this allow you to see it? I hope this clarifies things and someone can finally look into this problem.

    Thanks for adding that screenshot.

As a volunteer, I cannot see it, but Staff will be able to do so when they look in on this thread.

  • Hi there,

    Thanks for the screen shot.

The site hasn’t been hijacked or compromised in any way. It appears like another site’s feed just somehow became merged with this site’s feed in the Reader. I’ve asked someone from our Reader team to check if they can separate those feeds again. I’ll let you know once I hear back from them.

Ok, great. But how can a blog that is not a WordPress blog (studiopress.com) end up in my reader in the first place? What you are suggesting would make more sense if it was two WordPress blogs that accidentally merged but StudioPress is not a WordPress site. I hope there will be a better explanation once your Reader team looks into this. Thanks.

  • Any site with an RSS feed can be followed in the WordPress.com Reader, and it only takes one person following the particular site to give it its own feed in the Reader.

And in this case, StuioPress.blog is a Jetpack-connected WordPress website. Any site connected to WordPress.com via Jetpack has a feed automatically created for it in the Reader, just like WordPress.com sites.

Ok thanks for clarifying. I hope the sites in question will get their feeds straightened out soon.

  • Just to follow up, you shouldn’t see any new posts from StudioPress show up under that blog. Please let me know if you do.

Ok, I will. Thanks for helping to sort this out.
