Blog is broken
-
These features are broken on my blog (I am logged in).
I cannot read comments using the upper right corner ‘bell’ icon.
I cannot post replies to comments. The interface acts as if I am logged out.
I cannot log in as the page shows I already am logged in. I can only post a reply by re-logging in pressing the WordPress logo on the reply area.
New comments are directed into the Trash for no reason.
I can only view, respond to reader comments using the main dashboard. This all started today. Reboot doesn’t help. Browser switch doesn’t either and Flash update doesn’t help.

Hi there,
That sounds like a few things that are not usually related. If I can ask, do you happen to use any software or browser extensions that block cookies? It sounds like your login cookie may not be saved, which would cause issues with commenting.
Also what is the browser you use most heavily? Chrome, yes? If you log in to WordPress.com using an “Incognito Window” do any of these issues go away?
Thanks for the additional info!
-
I am using Opera browser. But the problem persists in Chrome too.
I have Windows 10.
I tried rebooting which erases cookies.
Chrome has an ad blocker but still has the problem ad blocker is turned off.
Opera has it’s own ad controller but worked in WP just fine until this week.
I do not use VPN or other similar utility.
The password is entered automatically by the browser.
Flash was ‘updated’ this week. Maybe I need my older version of Flash. -
also – I manually turned off the ad-blocker in Opera and it does not help.
I have lots of comments on my blogs and it is very cumbersome when I ‘bell’ notification button doesn’t work.

Hi there,
You mentioned that this happens in both Opera and Chrome. What’s the version you’re using?
Also, check that Javascript is enabled on your browsers.
-
I write JavaScript code. It is enabled in both browsers and the WP website settings allow it.
Opera ver. 71.0.3770.198
Chrome ver. 85.0.4183.121This comments-icon-broken issue happened without me changing any settings.
-
I’m not able to reproduce the issue in those browsers.
Would you please check with all browser extensions switched off?
-
here are 2 screen shots showing what happens at my end –
This is AFTER turning off all features on Opera.
It looks the same in Google even when stopping ad blocker etc. etc.https://cfgate.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/fccomments.jpg
https://cfgate.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/971comments.jpgI have constant comments on my WP blogs. I need the comment feature t work normaly. It was just fine last week.
-
Why are you fobbing this issue off on different employees? No one there knows anything? I cannot be the only one with this issue.
-
Thanks for the screenshots! I’m still not able to reproduce this in the latest Chrome.
Can you confirm you checked with all extensions off, not just the ad blocker?
Also, do you see this issue in Edge or Firefox?
At this point, we’re just trying to narrow down variables so we can reproduce the issue on our end and therefore identify and fix it.
Why are you fobbing this issue off on different employees?
We’re all a team, we don’t necessarily “own” threads individually.
-
sorry for snippy comment about fobbing off.
I do not use Firefox.
On Opera I just tried settings>allow for everything, ads, location, microphone etc.
The blog – after refresh – does the same thing shown in the screenshots.Chrome – same result.
Edge – (I never use this and the password isn’t saved in it to log into WP).
ODDITY! The bell – comments-show-up thing WORKS in this old version of I.E.!!
https://cfgate.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/fccommentsie.jpgI am thinking maybe when this feature broke in Opera and Chrome it wasn’t because of the browser. It could have been a sneaky Windows 10 update that went in and screwed up something.

Hi @flyingcuttlefish your issue with Notifications not appearing correctly does appear to affect the most recent version of Opera, and was reported to us by another site owner here as well.
I noticed in your screenshots seem to show you clicking on the bell icon on the front end of the site in the black bar (the admin bar) at the top of the screen. But in my tests I noticed that the icon does work if you click on it in the WordPress.com admin pages, such as here: https://wordpress.com/home/
Can you confirm that you are able to see notifications there, and the issue only affects the bar on the site frontend (and wp-admin) thanks!
-
Yes, I did try the administration page idea.
I also opened the comments page withing the wp-admin page and couldn’t get it to go.For now, I am happy to discover I can use IE browser just for checking comments.
The bell icon is way easier for me to keep up with the blogs. The other way of doing it requires me to open the comments page within wp-admin on each blog and see if any comments are new, pending etc.

Correct, I can confirm they do not work in wp-admin, and they do not work on the website itself if you click in the black bar. We have our team looking at those thanks. :)
What I am curious about is if you get notifications when you visit https://wordpress.com/home/ and click here:
For me they work (in Opera and Chrome) if I visit from that location, the one with the blue bar at the top. Same for you? Thanks for the additional info!
-
A white space drops down like it is trying to display comments … but a small circle swirls (a waiting symbol) in the center and just keeps swirling. I have a good connection so it isn’t poor internet at my end.
Also, none of the other options display anything (Unread, Likes etc.). Just a swirly circle.I tried a lot of tricks before contacting support.

There are some screen shots in above replies showing how my browser shows the bell button ….

Your screen shots both show the black admin bar that appears if you view your site at https://9east71.home.blog/ or the dashboard at https://9east71home.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
We just want to confirm if it’s also broken for you in the blue admin bar at https://wordpress.com/home/
For us it’s working in the blue admin bar, while it’s broken in the black admin bar.
-
I have new update.
When I go to left top and click on “My Sites” to look at stats etc. – the bell icon WORKS!Where to top of the page says “My Home”. The comments drop down and show up as normal. I am in Opera browser.
Good enough for me at this point.
-
Okay, so that confirms it works in the blue admin bar, and is only broken in the black admin bar. Thanks for confirming that.
At this point we’ll need to wait for a developer to take a look at this, but we’ll keep you updated.
