Blog isn't being indexed

    Hello,

    It’s been over half a year since I began my blog (a free blog on WordPress.com), and yet Google doesn’t seem to have indexed it at all. (Duckduckgo has, interestingly.) I have confirmed that “Allow search engines to index this site” is on. Any tips would be welcome.

    I’ve also heard that registering the site on Google Search Console is an option, but I’ve not been able to do that, as I’ve run into problems trying to upload the HTML file they output.

    Hi there,

    That’s strange. I checked your site’s robots.txt file and the sitemap, and both of those look normal, so all search engines should be able to index your site.

    Verifying in Search Console is the next step I’d also suggest – on WordPress.com sites you don’t use the HTML file method, but the meta-tag instead:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/site-verification-services/

    Please do that, and upload the sitemaps listed at https://kojisposts.wordpress.com/robots.txt. From within Search Console I think you should also be able to request re-indexing of your site, so do that, and give it a couple weeks.

    If your site still doesn’t get indexed after doing that, you might need to contact Google support directly, because everything appears fine to me on our end.

    Hello –

    Thank you for your response. I followed the steps you suggested, including the meta-tag and uploading the sitemap, and at least now I have a profile on Google Search Console and the homepage is being indexed on Google.

    However, only two pages total – the homepage and one post – are being indexed, even though they say they discovered 110 URLs from the sitemap. The one post that did get indexed isn’t my most popular post either. Just wanted to check if this was normal behaviour or not.

    We are not in control of how Google indexes sites so we are not able to look into why this might be the case. If you just connected your site Google Search Console one thing to be aware of is that it can take a few days before the index the entire site. It’s not instantaneous.

    If you continue to see content that is not being indexed you can ask them to re-crawl the site by following the steps here: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/advanced/crawling/ask-google-to-recrawl
