Blog layout/formatting problem

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, just started my blog at http://bobmitchellinthe21stcentury.wordpress.com/

I had a look through 8 pages there, couldn’t see this exact problem. When I view my page on my hoem computer the layout, formatting etc looks smooth

But when I look at it from my office computer, the text is wrapped round the pictures in an off-kilter way, it’s not formatted right. I’ve spoken to a few people who’ve read my blog, some think it looks smooth, some see it off-kilter

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers
    Bob

What browser (and version and operating system do you use at work?

Just a couple notes: I would check and make sure your images are not too wide for your particular theme. Secondly, some of the images are quite large (file size wise) and you should probably think about optimizing them. Here are a couple links to help with that.

If you are not using the image in thumbnail size, make sure that the image is not too wide for the post area in your particular theme. You can find maximum image widths for the most popular themes here: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/25/how-big-can-my-images-be/

Optimize your images so that your blog pages will load faster. See http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/08/optimise-your-images/

Well at work it’s a really old Internet Explorer, not sure which one to be honest, probably 98 I think

I hadn’t thought about, or mastered, thumbnails yet, I’ll need to look into that

I see from your link that my images were too wide for the theme I’m using, Kubrick

Many thanks for the speedy reply, much appreicated!

No problem and you are welcome. Check your browser at work. The older versions of IE (prior to 6) can be a little problematic. If possible, you might think about downloading FireFox at work and using that. There are virtually no problems with it.

The people using Firefox seem to see it ok, people on IE have a problem.

For those on Firefox the top story reads like this…

    (Picture of Superman)
“DC – The New Frontier is a comic lover’s dream comic, a daring project that reinterprets the unchecked ambition and four-colour inventiveness of the 1950s.”

    People on IE see….

    (Picture of Superman)
    “DC

    The
    New
    Frontier
    is
    a
    comic
    lover’s
    dream
    comic,
    a
    daring”

    squished along side it

I’ve tried it on IE myself on my home computer and the formatting is out on that too

Okay here’s the thing. Firefox will attempt to render the images to “fit” and IE will not. http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/06/16/know-your-browser/

I agree with thesacredpath. Otimize and pre-size your images prior to uploading them. Be sure they actually “fit” into the blogging space because some themes will chop them off and other themes will scrunch them.

In addition reduce the number of posts on your front page to reduce loading time. Also to reduce loading time you can turn of “snap previews”.

To set the number of posts on your front page -> Options -> Reading and scroll down to:
    Blog Pages
    Show at most: ___posts
Fill in a lower number like 5 for example and then click “Update Options” to save the change.

To turn off “snap previews” -> Presentation -> Extras
    find the checkbox:
    Extras
These are general extras that you can enable for your entire blog.
____Enable Snap Preview Anywhere on this blog
Remove the checkmark and click “Update Extras” to save the change.

    HTH:)

    Awesome!

I resized the pics before uploading them all over again and it looks like that has done the trick

    Thanks a lot guys!
