Blog link questions…new link for old blog

  • Unknown's avatar

Howdy, I want to change the name of my blog. The new domain name is available, and once I purchase it, I want the OLD blog, at an OLD URL, to send people over to the new URL. In other words, even though they type in Entertaining Welsey Shaw or entertainingwelseyshaw.com, I want them to be taken to the new URL, Imagining Welsey Shaw, or imaginingwelseyshaw.com. Of course, I also want people who just type in imaginingwelseyshaw.com to go there too.

I realize I have to have both the old URL and the new one active at the same time to get people “thrown over.” But I want to make sure when I buy the new URL, I can link the OLD blog, the already existing blog, to it. I want entertainingwelseyshaw.com to link over to imaginingwelseyshaw.com, no matter which URL people type in.

    That’s it. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi John,

Sure thing! You can do that by adding the new domain name to your existing blog from the Domains page. You can register the new domain you want to use and choose to add it to your site at entertainingwelseyshaw.com.

You can have as many domains as you’d like registered for the same site, and only the primary domain you choose will be visible on the site. (You can set the primary domain on your site’s My Domains page.) That way, as long as entertainingwelseyshaw.com is still active, anyone who visits that domain will be redirected to your new domain showing the same blog content.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

    Hi. Thanks for replying.

Well, at some point I want to get rid of the old domain, maybe in a year when it’s time to renew. So I want the new domain to be the only (or at least main) domain by then.

Also, does it matter if I purchase the new domain through WP or with someone else, like GoDaddy? Will the procedure for getting it linked up to my old blog be any different?

    Thx.

    Hi John,

Well, at some point I want to get rid of the old domain, maybe in a year when it’s time to renew. So I want the new domain to be the only (or at least main) domain by then.

That’s fine! You can make the new domain the primary domain on the blog right away, and when you get rid of the old domain it will just stop redirecting visitors to your new domain.

Also, does it matter if I purchase the new domain through WP or with someone else, like GoDaddy? Will the procedure for getting it linked up to my old blog be any different?

If you purchase the new domain elsewhere, you’ll need to follow the steps to map the domain to your blog. The main difference is that you’ll need to adjust the domain’s name servers (through the registrar where you purchase the domain) to point it to WordPress.com — if you purchase the domain here you can skip that step because the domain is already set up to work here.

Either way, you can add the domain to your blog from the Domains page. (You can use the “Register a New Domain” button to register the domain here, or the “Map an Existing Domain” button to add a domain registered elsewhere.)

Awesome. I’ll try that if I change the ULR. Thanks.
