Harry, first off your blog loads fine for me. It might be that when you checked, the servers at wordpress were busy, or perhaps their was high traffic on the internet. I wouldn’t worry about it. I see nothing on your blog that is a problem.

On the feed, again, do not worry about that issue. Your feed validates fine. There are some adjustments wordpress could make in the backend to make things more compatible, but with it validating with no errors don’t worry about it.

@thesacredpath thank you , its just i’m dont see any hits from google, bing or yahoo in the dashboard although i’m getting lots for my type of blog

  • Unknown's avatar

what do you want me to do with the link you left

  • Unknown's avatar

I just included the link so that you could see that your feed validates.

It takes a while to build enough page rank so that your stuff shows up higher in search results. I didn’t start getting very many search engine hits until about a year after I started my blog.

Also, it seems some of your tagging in your posts might be inappropriate to the subject of the post. As an example in your post on “electrical tips” you have it tagged with all of these,

bleed a radiator, fit radiator valve, garden fencing, how to paint decking, painting walls, replace a cistern, strip paint

which have nothing to do really with electrical tips. Search engines don’t like that. When they look at tags and categories, they compare those to what they pull out of the body of the post as keywords, and if they don’t match, they will most likely place your post farther down in search results.

I would strongly suggest you go back through your posts and reconsider all the tags you have added to them and only include tags that are appropriate to the subject of the post. If someone comes to your blog wanting tips on replacing a cistern, and gets a post on electrical tips, they will remember that and might not come back.

i was thinking of doing the tags again as you say i might loss hits for a while but it has to be done :( also i was going to shorten my catagories and change some of them

  • Unknown's avatar

You shouldn’t lose any hits really I don’t think, or if you did it would be for a fairly short period of time since the search engines typically completely reindex everything about every 3 or 4 months.

I think you are headed in the right direction though. You currently have a 3/10 page rank, and that is pretty good really. I’ve seen a lot of blogs older than yours that still only have 2/10 rankings.

  • Unknown's avatar

ok i’ll do it , it will take days :) how did you find my page rank

  • Unknown's avatar

Just google “page rank checker” and you will find several sites to use.

Yeah, changing tags and such can be a big job.

Is 5/10 good for a blog that is about 2 years old but has been worked at a bit for the last just under a year?

Any hints as to how to improve things? Or where to look for improvement tips?

    thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

5/10 is very good actually. Most blogs will run between 4 and 5. Mine, when I’m posting regularly will be up at 5, but I’ve been neglecting it for the past year or so so it is back down to a 4.

Appropriate tags and categories, and incoming links are the main things. Also, take some time with post titles and try to include at least one keyword from your post into it. There is a whole science built around titles. Also, try to use keywords more than once in your posts, but don’t overdo it. Search engines get suspicious pretty easily.

Timethief has quite a number of good posts on SEO practices and such over at http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com .

Thanks – I have been looking at Timethief’s site for a while. Lots of good advice, maybe I should take more of it :).

I guess dumb luck works with only 50 Posts once in a while. (OK some took 40 hours to craft and a “quick and short” one is maybe 4 or 5 hours)
