blog login

My WordPress blog used to have a nice little link named “login” on the right sidebar, along with a list of categories and archives, that took me to the WordPress username/password login dialogue box.

Then I played around with what was in the primary and secondary widget areas, the search widget and the “login” disappeared, figured out what happened with the search widget and put it back. Still can’t find a way to get “login” back though. The Meta Widget adds “Site Admin,” “Entries RSS,” etc. I don’t want the other links, one reason being that the two RSS links lead to useless pages of XML code. I just want “login” there so my co-authors on this blog have something convenient to click on to log in. Any way to remedy this? I do not have the ability to install widget plugins from outside developers — I need to work within the WordPress dashboard.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

Do you have an image of what this login link used to look like by any chance?

The only native way I know of that adds a login link is the Meta widget you found. The RSS links included there are for the RSS feeds for your site.

If that’s unsatisfactory you could add a link to a Text widget:

Unfortunately I do not have a screenshot of what the blog’s homepage used to look like with the old login link on the sidebar. I’m 98 percent certain that the “login” was there but the additional links (Entries RSS, Register, etc.) were not there before I started using the Meta widget.

Creating a link to the WordPress login page with a Text widget might be the best solution — I’m trying to keep from cluttering the homepage with stuff people don’t use/need.

Interestingly I just discovered the clicking on Entries RSS link in the Meta widget while in Firefox does not lead to a page of XML code like happens when using Chrome. In Firefox I get a functional page asking me if I want to start subscribing using RSS.

Created the Text widget for the login. Thank you for the suggestion. Feel free to suggest more improvements for https://activelearningps.wordpress.com/.

Add the Meta Widget. IT has the login link.

But the Meta widget also has a bunch of other links that I don’t want/use.

YOU may not want them, but your readers do. It’s a compromise, but if you want to grow readership, particularly among techies, it’s a good idea.

Different browsers handle different types of files differently. Currently Chrome doesn’t automatically offer users any suggestions for what to do with XML.

raincoaster does have a point that these RSS feed links can be useful to your readers. It gives them an easy way to subscribe to your site using their favorite RSS feed reader rather than the WordPress.com Reader. But its totally up to you! :)
